Application Specialist - Data Center Cooling Systems - HVAC role at CAREL. Carel is a growing, multinational organization specializing in controls for HVAC, HVAC/R and humidification systems. Focus is on applying our control and cooling solutions in industrial environments, including data center cooling, by developing and implementing market best practices for HVAC systems to OEMs and end-users. Proactively leads initiatives to apply efficient control strategies for industrial processes including manufacturing, data centers, and other critical facilities. Reports to the Sr. Application Manager and collaborates with Global Marketing Solutions teams. Responsibilities
Actively support design and implementation of complete HVAC control solutions with OEMs in industrial markets, focusing on energy efficiency, cooling capacity, reliability, regulatory compliance, and best practices. Support commercial efforts including technical training, installation protocols, documentation development, configuration and commissioning processes, troubleshooting methodologies, and general guidance to OEMs involved with industrial process cooling, heavy-duty ventilation, data center cooling, and other industrial HVAC applications. Participate in product strategy, development, and manufacturing coordination for new and emerging HVAC products based on industrial needs and market demands, with emphasis on process cooling, high-density cooling, and energy optimization. Provide technical expertise on integrating and optimizing controllers, supervisory systems, humidifiers, heat exchangers, dampers, and other HVAC accessories within industrial environments to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop product solutions responsive to customer needs and market opportunities. Communicate status and actions needed for problem resolution and recommendations for improvements in a timely manner. Advocate for positive customer outcomes, especially where HVAC system reliability is essential. Identify best HVAC controller and system practices from the customer-needs perspective and develop standards addressing known or anticipated requirements in industrial applications. Technical Focus Areas
The Application Specialist provides expertise across a broad range of industrial HVAC applications, including: Data center cooling: traditional air systems, chilled water solutions, and advanced liquid cooling technologies; work with CRAHs/CRACs, hot/cold aisle containment, airflow management, variable speed fans and compressors, economizers, free cooling, and environmental monitoring for reliability. High-density computing environments: development of CDUs and secondary coolant distribution systems; control strategies for D-to-C cooling, cold plates, and immersion cooling; integration with building management systems and redundancy/failover strategies for uptime. Industrial HVAC systems: process cooling for manufacturing, mining, oil & gas, and heavy industry; industrial ventilation, filtration, and contamination control; explosion-proof and hazardous area requirements. Energy efficiency, heat recovery, waste heat utilization, and dehumidification/humidity control to maintain product quality and reduce costs. Controlled environments: clean rooms, agricultural and food processing cooling, pharmaceutical and biotech facilities, transportation and marine HVAC, and cooling for power generation and utilities. This job has no supervisory responsibilities. The company uses a matrix organization; the Application Specialist reports to the Sr. Application Manager. Competencies include: HVAC System Troubleshooting: diagnosing controllers, supervisory systems, humidifiers, heat exchangers, dampers, and accessories; understanding system performance in relation to control systems and monitoring services. Problem Solving: timely problem identification and resolution; collaboration in team settings for industrial environments with critical response requirements. Technical Collaboration: teamwork, feedback, and commitment to goals; ability to build morale and cross-functional cooperation. Customer Service: providing accurate, clear, and timely information; acting as a trusted advisor; leveraging resources to improve outcomes; awareness of urgency in production-critical environments. Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field preferred. Three years of experience configuring and trouble-shooting HVAC control systems in industrial applications (industrial ventilation, process cooling, data center cooling, explosion-proof HVAC, traditional air cooling, CDUs, liquid cooling, etc.). Experience with integration of controllers, supervisory systems, humidifiers, heat exchangers, dampers, and other accessories is required. Recent graduates with relevant coursework, internships, or project experience may be considered for a junior variant. Computer and presentation literacy, including ability to build technical decks and documentation. Working knowledge of industrial standards (API, NEMA, ATEX, etc.) and energy efficiency metrics (e.g., PUE, WUE) is a plus. Understanding of brand positioning, market research, and solutions application in representing the company to customers. Language Skills Excellent technical communication in English; other languages are a plus for regional roles. Reasoning Ability Strong technical aptitude in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and control theory as applied to industrial/process and data center cooling. Ability to adapt technical information to different audiences; relate market research to customer relationships. Physical Demands Regularly interact with customers and colleagues; use computer in office/field; may climb ladders, work in raised floors, lift up to 40 pounds; up to 40% overnight travel and occasional weekend travel. Work Environment Office, manufacturing, industrial plants, labs, and data center environments; travel by car and plane; exposure to noise, temperature extremes, airborne particles, electrical equipment, hazardous chemicals, explosive atmospheres, and confined spaces; PPE may be required; noise varies from quiet to high levels.
