The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed. New York City maintains extensive water and sewer infrastructure, including catch basins, hydrants, valves, reservoirs, groundwater wells, underground storage tanks, and miles of sewer and water mains. The Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) is responsible for operation, maintenance, and protection of these systems, ensuring compliance with NYC regulations. We seek an Assistant Environmental Engineer (AEE) to join our Construction team to oversee water and sewer system projects, monitor contractor activities, and ensure compliance with regulations. Responsibilities include supervising construction, preparing reports, conducting inspections, reviewing plans, and coordinating with city personnel. Essential Job Functions
Oversee and inspect construction of water mains, sewers, and roadway work. Provide daily reports on contractor activities and project status. Update documents and files regularly. Conduct site inspections and field visits. Review drawings, plans, and reports. Prepare and approve estimates and payment verifications. Maintain communication with supervisory staff. Report on work status and critical events. Prepare monthly and quarterly project reports. Minimum Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college, plus one year of relevant experience, or Baccalaureate degree in one of the above fields and a master’s degree in environmental engineering, with master’s substituting for one year of experience. Preferred Skills
Valid NYS driver’s license. Comfort with underground inspections and on-call work. Strong communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of water and sewer construction and field experience. Research capabilities. This position is open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.
