Overview
Smith College: Program in World Literatures, Northampton, MA. Open position: tenure-track Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2026. We seek a specialist in critical theory, with competency in translation studies and broad theoretical expertise in comparative world literatures. The candidate should engage with developments in comparative world literatures and translation studies and specialize in a literature that expands the global reach of the program. We are particularly interested in scholars working in any of the following traditions: comparative literatures of the Middle East (Arabic, Persian, Turkish), South Asia, or Indigenous literatures. The successful candidate should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts. Location: Northampton, MA. Open Date: Sep 08, 2025.
Responsibilities
Teach the program's capstone seminars in Literary Theory and Translation Studies and introductory courses in World Literatures. Teach further courses in alignment with the candidate's field of specialization. Contribute to an inclusive and diverse educational environment for students across the liberal arts.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, World Literature, a language and its literature, or another relevant field, expected by time of appointment. Strong record or potential in critical theory, translation studies, and comparative world literatures. Experience with or commitment to equity and inclusion in teaching and scholarship.
