NOW HIRING LATERAL TRANSFERS
EXPERIENCED LAW ENFORCEMENT (POST-CERTIFIED) AND CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS ONLY.
To serve as a law enforcement officer engaged in the custody, safety, discipline, and well-being of prisoners and defendants while transported to and from the courts, state facilities, prisons, jails, cell blocks, etc., or while with prisoners and defendants when within those locations; to provide and maintain an effective court security program; to provide for effective inmate/prisoner management that includes the transport of prisoners and inmates to and from District Court, Family Court, Superior Court, state facilities, hospitals, jails, prisons, and/or cellblocks; to execute Writs of Process, both civil and criminal, and to summon witnesses to appear in court; and to do related work as required.
Supervision SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Works under the general supervision of a superior from whom general and specific assignments are received.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED : Usually none.
Responsibilities
To serve as a law enforcement officer engaged in the custody, safety and welfare of prisoners and defendants while transported to and from courts and facilities, or while with prisoners and defendants in locations listed above.
To provide and maintain an effective court security program by maintaining the integrity of courtroom chambers and anterooms through daily checks.
To supervise inmate/prisoner management and transport to and from District Court, Family Court, Superior Court, state facilities, hospitals, jails, prisons, and/or cellblocks.
To execute Writs of Process, civil and criminal, and to summon witnesses; to make proper returns of writs, summonses and other legal processes.
To be responsible for the custody, safety and welfare of prisoners and defendants (including suicidal and high-risk persons); to exercise constant vigilance to protect them from injury and to prevent escapes.
To coordinate clearing the courtroom during evacuations; to monitor order and decorum and to arrest/take action as needed.
To supervise conduct and maintain order among prisoners; to ensure custody and safety during transport and while detained in courthouses or other locations.
To participate in extradition, hospital, and other related detail assignments.
To collect fees for services performed as officers of the court as authorized.
To serve Writs of Arrest and handle apprehension and detention of individuals named in process.
To carry firearms when appropriate and maintain proficiency in their use and maintenance.
To operate security vehicles to transport inmates, prisoners and defendants.
To perform related work as required.
Qualifications
An applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
Must have reached the age of eighteen (18) years.
Must not have tattoos or body art visible while wearing the Division's uniform (with specific concealment allowances); offensive tattoos/body art may preclude participation.
Must be a high school graduate or have a GED.
Must meet Rhode Island weapon qualification requirements and possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Visual acuity of 20/20 or better with correction; normal ocular color and depth perception as determined by a Division physician; normal hearing ability as determined by a physician.
POST-CERTIFIED Requirements
The Division may hire POST-certified individuals from various academies or comparable certifications.
Must complete tests: Cooper Standard physical fitness, background investigation, psychiatric evaluation, firearms recertification, physician's examination, and any other training determined by the Director of DPS, FTO program, and probationary period.
Seniority considerations may apply if concurrent academy opportunities exist with different employee groups.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A working knowledge of judicial and court security; control of restrained persons; Rhode Island general law; arrest and search procedures; apprehension and detention of persons served with arrest warrants; security measures in transporting prisoners; constant vigilance to prevent escapes; effective communication; proper use and maintenance of firearms; and operation of motor vehicles in transport of prisoners. Related capacities and abilities.
Special Requirements
Must be capable of performing essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation, as evidenced by a physician’s certificate.
Must submit to a full background criminal investigation (BCI) prior to participation in training.
Must complete Deputy Sheriff Training Program or certification prior to appointment; evaluated by a certified psychologist with a satisfactory rating.
Must meet Rhode Island weapon qualification requirements and maintain them as a condition of employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid Operator’s License; may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
