ACADEMY GRADUATE (Pre-Service):

Requires successful completion/graduation from an accredited Police Academy in California.

Under general supervision, performs law enforcement work in a community-oriented policing model through patrol, crime prevention, investigation, community partnership and special assignment detail. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direction from a Police Sergeant. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: Patrols an assigned area and responds to calls for service, searching for indicators of criminal activity, traffic and other law violations, and threats to life and property. Issues warnings or citations; conducts preliminary and follow up investigations; prepares required reports; provides emergency medical care as necessary; observes, monitors, and directs traffic conditions; assists and advises motorists; and enforces laws. Makes arrests as necessary; serves warrants; interviews victims, complainants, and witnesses; interrogates suspects; gathers and preserves evidence; testifies and presents evidence in court. Attends briefings, training sessions, and professional development activities. Conducts neighborhood crime prevention programs; prepares and presents special programs to community groups and school classes designed to increase community awareness of police department service programs. Communicates with members of the community to identify problems and needs of the area and make recommendations for improvements in safety and quality of life. Performs follow-up investigations of economic, property, person, or narcotics related crimes; evaluates crime reports and reviews criminal history information; prepares, obtains, and serves warrants. Performs field training responsibilities, mentoring and evaluating trainees. Performs administrative functions related to personnel and training. Counsels victims, juveniles, and parents of juveniles; provides information and refers to other agencies for further assistance. Assists the public and answers questions; administers first aid and responds to calls for medical assistance. May participate in or be assigned to special assignments, programs, or teams. Performs minor maintenance on assigned patrol vehicle and other equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of: Federal, State and City laws, ordinances, and department regulations related to policing. Modern law enforcement practices and procedures. Public relations techniques and interagency communication practices. Modern office practices, procedures, methods, and equipment. Skill in: Learning, understanding, and interpreting laws and regulations. Analyzing situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action. Preparing accurate and grammatically correct written reports. Communicating effectively both orally and in writing. Maintaining effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, co-workers, other City employees, City officials, and the general public. Experience:

None is required, however previous law enforcement experience is highly desirable. Education:

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Graduation from a California P.O.S.T. approved Regular Basic Course at the time of appointment is required. License/Certificates:

Must possess a valid California Class C driver license by the time of appointment. Special Requirements:

Must be 21 years of age by the time of appointment. Must be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records. Disaster Service Worker:
