Department Information The Department of English promotes the study of human expression to empower students and prepare them for professional and civic life. The department offers English (BA), English Education (BS), and Professional Writing (MA) and supports First-Year Composition and General Education Literature. The college emphasizes workforce readiness, experiential learning, and opportunities for mentored research and internships. The college includes multiple schools and departments and provides more than 80 programs across traditional and interdisciplinary fields.
Job Summary Kennesaw State University is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Associate Professor or Professor of English and Director of First-Year Composition, with a preferred start date of August 2026. This is a nine-month contracted position with a summer stipend for administrative work available, contingent on funding. Work will be performed in the state of Georgia.
Responsibilities
Lead and advocate for the First-Year Composition Program as Director, with a program leadership team including an Assistant Director and Graduate Professional Assistant.
Serve as point of contact and resource for faculty teaching first-year composition courses.
Lead discussions and professional development on best practices for faculty teaching first-year composition.
Identify and implement freshman student success initiatives in collaboration with faculty.
Coordinate with the scheduling team to schedule first-year composition courses.
Collaborate with department leadership to evaluate and recruit faculty teaching first-year composition.
Lead programmatic assessment for the First-Year Composition Program.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Maintain an active scholarly agenda in areas such as Writing Program Administration, Composition Studies, and/or related fields; may receive research support from start-up funds and college funds.
Reduce teaching load to support leadership and research responsibilities (typical 1-0, contingent on workload model); opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; regular teaching of first-year composition (ENGL 1101 and 1102) is expected.
Teaching assignments will be based on earned degrees and faculty credentials guidelines.
Qualifications
Required: PhD or foreign equivalent in English or a related discipline at the time of hire.
Required: Teaching, research, and service record commensurate with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in Writing Program Administration.
National recognition demonstrating innovative leadership in Writing Program Administration and/or First-Year Composition.
Commitment to high-impact practices such as work-based learning, community-engaged learning, and undergraduate research to enhance First-Year Composition teaching.
Experience supporting faculty teaching effectiveness in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities.
