Overview
Bonnell Aluminum is seeking an Environmental Manager responsible for overseeing environmental permitting, operations, and compliance at Bonnell Aluminum’s Carthage, TN facility. The role includes developing and enhancing the plant’s environmental management system to ISO 14001 standards, supervising the wastewater treatment plant, and serving as the alternate Safety Manager. The Environmental Manager reports to the Plant Manager in Carthage and supports the Division EHS Director with divisional environmental initiatives and programs. Responsibilities
Establishes, maintains, and audits environmental policies and procedures. Ensures accurate and timely recordkeeping, monitoring, and report generation according to the Plant’s permits and applicable regulations to prevent fines, enforcement, and civil actions. Maintains a system to respond to regulatory agency inspections, including interacting with inspectors and communications with regulatory agencies. Assists Division EHS Director in setting strategic environmental direction and implementing environmental policies and procedures that support Bonnell’s short- and long-term objectives. Develops and communicates the plant’s environmental policies and procedures and ensures consistency with other plants. Develops, implements, and maintains the plant’s environmental management system (ISO 14001) to comply with or exceed environmental laws, regulations, policies, and guidance documents. Conducts employee training to maintain environmental compliance and promote sustainability awareness. Conserves resources and promotes reuse/recycling of waste to control costs and minimize waste streams and emissions; explores new technologies to improve waste treatment, recycling, minimization, and elimination. Keeps records for and completes reporting for the Plant’s Title V Air Permit, NPDES Permit, and general storm water permit; completes required EPA reports (Tier II, Toxics Release Inventory, TSCA) and permit-required reports ahead of deadlines. Manages the Carthage Plant’s waste streams including hazardous waste generation and disposal in compliance with regulatory requirements; oversees universal, special, and solid wastes; manages recycling and reuse systems for compliance or operations. Oversees treatment and discharge of plant wastewater in compliance with the wastewater discharge permit, supervising 6-10 direct reports. Develops direct reports through performance management, coaching, and stretch assignments. Provides Environmental Compliance direction to 25-35 salaried employees and 250-500 hourly employees. Conducts environmental training for all employees in accordance with permits and regulatory requirements. Communicates with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental issues. Determines how environmental regulations can impact new or proposed Bonnell Aluminum processes. Develops strategic relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, and consultants. Supports Bonnell’s safety program and performs as alternate Safety Manager. Responds to environmental incidents as primary emergency coordinator and completes follow-up and reporting to appropriate agencies. Reviews new materials for the Carthage Plant and maintains the Safety Data Sheet Management system. Conducts annual chemical inventory of the facility. Reports on key metrics, challenges, and opportunities to the Plant Manager and Division EHS Director. Supports Division EHS Director in strategic environmental objectives and implementation of environmental policies and procedures. Qualifications, knowledge, and skills
Operates effectively at various volume levels and can move easily from one to another. Able to prioritize in a complex environment and manage time effectively while organizing resources to achieve maximum productivity. Represents Bonnell Aluminum to external stakeholders to promote good faith in the community and with regulatory agencies. Possesses conflict management/negotiation skills. Proficient in technical writing to correspond with regulatory agencies, inspectors, and environmental consultants. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and related programs). Basic knowledge of financial concepts. Supervisory responsibilities
Supervision of 6-10 direct reports consisting of wastewater treatment operators; develop direct reports through performance management, coaching, and stretch assignments; ensure operator licenses are maintained and renewal training occurs. Provides Environmental Compliance direction to 25-35 salaried employees and 250-500 hourly employees. Conducts environmental training for all employees in accordance with permits and regulatory requirements. Communicates with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental issues. Performs environmental audits of the facility and provides feedback and guidance to leadership and staff to drive improvement. Inspires employees to embrace Bonnell’s core values and environmental policies and procedures. Education and experience
Bachelor of Science in an engineering or environmental-related field required; B.S. in chemical engineering or chemistry preferred. 3 to 5 years in an environmental-related field preferred. Prior environmental management experience at a large waste generator, industrial wastewater treatment facility, and/or Title V permitted facility preferred. Federal and State environmental regulatory experience required; Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation (TDEC) experience preferred. OSHA HAZWOPER, RCRA/DOT, or other certification preferred. Understanding of mechanical/chemical engineering of water systems required; prior operation/management of wastewater treatment systems preferred. Experience handling compliance inspections/audits, addressing findings, negotiating, and reporting to maintain permit compliance required. Seniority level
