Location: Albany, NY Category: Faculty Posted On: Mon Sep 22 2025 The Department of Mathematics & Statistics within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Albany seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in algebraic methods with potential applications to quantum computing or a related field. We seek a scholar with expertise in fundamental mathematics areas whose work bridges real-world applications related to quantum or neuromorphic computing, including, for example, post-quantum cryptography, quantum information theory, or quantum complexity theory. The Department includes 27 faculty members engaged in broad research areas spanning algebra, analysis, topology, probability, statistics, and data science. The candidate will pursue excellence in research, teaching, and service at a Carnegie R1 institution, enhance collaboration within the Department and across University centers to promote multidisciplinary research (including the AI Plus Institute), contribute to robust undergraduate and graduate programs, and perform community outreach and service to the University, College, and Department. Primary Responsibilities
Research : Scholarship and the creation of new knowledge through scholarly activities. Conducting innovative research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting research at professional meetings and conferences, and securing external funding to support programmatic research. Teaching : Educating students, mentoring them, and fostering their intellectual development, including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and course preparation and development. Service : Contributing to the governance and functioning of the university, college, and department, including participating in admissions, advising, and mentoring graduate students, and chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees. Minimum Qualifications: A terminal doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in mathematics from an accredited college or university by August 15, 2026. A record of research and scholarly activity in algebra with potential applications to quantum computing or a related field, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, preprint manuscripts, books, or conference proceedings. The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. Ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community Ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to the role Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience applying algebraic methods to the development of quantum computing or a related field. Two years of postdoctoral experience in mathematics. Record of innovation in algebraic methods, including impactful, peer-reviewed publications or conference proceedings. Evidence of potential to secure extramural funding for research and creative activities. Experience in teaching and curriculum development at the collegiate level. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams. Working Environment
