About the role
The role of an
R&D Scientist Vinegar Fermentation
is based in KERRY Global Technology & Innovation Centre in Beloit, Wisconsin, USA and reporting to the RD&A Senior Scientist, FP&P fermentation Lead. The candidate must be prepared to interact with and to work with other globally based Kerry staff, and to travel to support activities on sites/facilities occasionally. The successful candidate should demonstrate good “hands-on” experience working with bacterial systems in the field of fermentation processes (development, upscaling, downscaling), ideally for producing acetic acid, organic acids, and antimicrobial peptides within a laboratory/industrial environment. The successful candidate will be leading strategic projects in close collaboration with other globally based Kerry staff, with external third parties, and by combining “hands-on” bioprocess approaches and “in silico” analytical understanding. She/He will take part in the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) program for mining data and gaining IP value. The successful candidate will support the development of Kerry's portfolio of fermentation-derived antimicrobials for food, beverage, and animal applications. This is a Permanent role. Key responsibilities
Lead and/or participate in fermentation innovation and development projects. Set clear priorities, goals, and objectives for multi-disciplinary cross-functional project teams that create a competitive advantage for the business. Partner with the Global Fermentation R&D structure and the Food Protection R&D structure to ensure R&D objectives are aligned with business requirements and evolving market conditions. Plan, coordinate, and conduct fermentation research and establish new methods for developing media, optimizing growth parameters, and validating growth yields through collaboration with the Global Fermentation Group. Lead the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) program for mining data and gaining IP value. Ensure the development of microbiological and fermentation processes for evaluation and economic production of antimicrobial metabolites are completed. Lead development capabilities in the field of System biology, metabolic modeling, molecular biology, and metabolomics in collaboration with other SMEs. Ensure technical reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and scientific presentations are accurate and kept up to date. Perform scientific literature searches, patent reviews, and utilize institutional libraries to evaluate data and published literature to support product development efforts and research needs. Contribute to training team members on the use of fermentation equipment and drive continued development of fermentation methods for Kerry that add value to Kerry's Food Protection portfolio. Share the responsibility of maintaining the smooth operation of the fermentation lab, including maintenance, hygiene, consumables, procedures, and QSHE (Quality, Safety, Health and Environment), as well as participating in the selection/commissioning of new equipment. Qualifications and skills
MS, PhD or equivalent in microbiology, biotechnology, bioprocess, bioengineering, system biology, metabolic modeling, micro engineering, biochemistry in a relevant field. 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role, developing multi-functional metabolites (Acetic acid, organic acids, peptides) and knowledge of optimization of media, growth parameters, and yield is required. 2-3 years’ experience of hands-on research and development in microbial fermentation or industrial microbiology, whether in industry or an academic setting. Autonomous operation of bioreactor systems (Aerobic fermentation/acetator) with advanced controls is highly beneficial. Experience at pilot scale or in a production environment is critical. Demonstrate an ability for multi-tasking, in planning and time management. Competence in general microbiology laboratory practices and aseptic techniques. Experience with molecular biology (PCR, cloning, etc.) or analytical techniques (biochemical assays, HPLC, etc.) is advantageous. Competence in writing technical documents such as research reports, SOPs, etc. Proficiency with Excel or other data processing/visualization software is desirable. Experience with numerical techniques or programming languages is a plus. Experience in selecting/benchmarking and troubleshooting laboratory equipment is advantageous. Experience working in collaborative and multi-cultural/international environments is a plus. About the company
At Kerry, we are proud to provide our customers – some of the world’s best-known food, beverage, and pharma brands – with the expertise, insights, and know-how they need to deliver products that people enjoy and feel better about consuming.
