Must be able to understand and carry out the orders and directions of the captain. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: operating cargo pumps, tank/pipeline valves, manual and hydraulic booms. Expected to stand a navigational watch on trips greater than 600 NM.
Responsibilities
Stand wheelhouse watch alternating with Captain.
Oversee vessel safety, including equipment inspections.
Safely make and break tow with barges, handle lines and wires.
Maintain charts, light lists, Coast Pilots, and other publications.
Train deckhands in seamanship and machinery use.
Assist captain in barge landings, communicate distances and directions clearly.
Determine and assign lookouts as necessary.
Enforce safety practices.
Complete accurate paperwork; basic arithmetic skills required.
Maintain professional relations with customers.
Check oil and water in equipment.
Perform general maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel and barge.
Test cargo hoses and piping.
Change engine oil and filters.
Splice lines and gear.
Inspect vessel and barge cleanliness.
Inventory and order supplies.
Monitor onboard supplies usage.
Qualifications
Valid Coast Guard license (1600 GT near Coastal or Oceans) with radar observer, Towing, OICNW, ECDIS, STCW, and PIC barge endorsements.
Experience as a Mate or Master of a tug hauling oil barges.
Experience as a tank barge operator preferred.
Knowledge of transfer operations, safety practices, and Coast Guard requirements.
Valid driver’s license, first aid, CPR, HAZWOPER training.
Physically capable of handling heavy equipment and working in various weather conditions.
Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

Work aboard boats and barges with various tools and equipment.
Operate diesel engines, cargo pumps, hydraulic booms, and valves.
Hours
Flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, nights, and call outs.
