Overview
Prosecuting Attorney position at Salt Lake County. This role involves performing entry to senior level legal work in the District Attorney’s Office, applying professional judgment in the preparation and presentation of cases. Responsibilities
Review investigative reports and screen requests for prosecution to determine validity of facts. Meet with law enforcement officers, complainants, victims, and witnesses for screening decisions as required. Prepare or direct the preparation of screening worksheets, fact sheets, informations, declinations, arrest warrants, or summons. Prepare or direct the preparation of search warrants and investigative subpoenas. Review case files in preparation for trials and hearings; coordinate with officers, citizens, and expert witnesses to determine evidence. Assess strengths and weaknesses of cases, negotiate plea agreements within office policies and procedures. Prepare cases prior to court appearances; research laws pertaining to case facts; prepare witnesses for court appearances. Appear in appropriate courts, conduct trials or hearings, and present evidence and arguments as an advocate for the County and/or State. Maintain current knowledge and skill in all phases of trial, including rules of procedure and evidence. Prepare judgments, orders, findings of fact, and conclusions of law as directed; review for appeal and file necessary appeals to protect the County’s and State’s interests. Participate in office training and continuing legal education; provide educational services and trainings to law enforcement and the public within applicable policies. Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a recognized college of law with a Juris Doctor (JD). Member in good standing with the Utah State Bar Association or another state bar with the ability to become a member of the Utah State Bar on the first day of work. Must pass an initial criminal background check and ongoing checks as required (BCI). Grade 18: $122,000 to $122,700 DOE; entry level; prior judicial clerkship may be credited as full-time legal employment. Grade 19: $127,000 to $131,000 DOE; minimum of three years of full-time paid employment in the practice of law; prior judicial clerkship may be credited. Grade 20: $131,000 to $174,271 DOE; minimum of eight years of full-time paid employment in the practice of law; prior judicial clerkship may be credited. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Salt Lake County Ordinances, legal documentation, legal research methods, and the U.S. and Utah Constitutions. Understanding of substantive and procedural law, governmental organizations, and public administration principles. Familiarity with criminal justice system and courtroom procedures; supervisory techniques. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing; present to the public; interpret written law; think and reason logically; apply general principles to specific situations; work independently.
