Overview
Staff Attorney (Lee, Collier and Charlotte County) position at City of Whitehall. This professional role involves research and writing of legal memoranda, draft opinions and draft orders in circuit and county court matters, including criminal matters (post-conviction motions and related civil matters), and other miscellaneous pre-trial or post-trial issues, as well as civil matters and family law issues. Work is performed under general supervision of the Supervising Senior Staff Attorney and Judges, and is reviewed in progress as necessary and upon completion. Responsibilities
Assist Criminal Division Judges: review and monitor post-conviction motions, conduct legal research, make recommendations to judges, and submit proposed orders. Review miscellaneous pre-trial or post-trial criminal motions or other criminal matters as requested; conduct legal research, make recommendations, and submit proposed orders. Draft proposed jury instructions and advise on sentencing options when requested. Monitor death penalty proceedings; conduct legal research, make recommendations, and submit proposed orders. Assist Civil Division Judges: review petitions seeking extraordinary remedies, conduct legal research, make recommendations, draft memoranda of law, and submit proposed orders; review civil motions as requested and advise on issues. Assist Appellate Banc with County-to-Circuit Appeals: review appeal files at pre-disposition stages, conduct legal research, make recommendations, and submit proposed orders; review trial records and appellate briefs and submit memoranda with recommendations and proposed opinions. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Education and Experience
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Work experience demonstrating orientation toward public service. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of legal principles, statutory and case law, court rules and procedures; familiarity with Florida State Courts System; proficiency with Westlaw and/or Lexis, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Legal writing; strong research and editing skills; ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly. Ability to reason logically, analyze complex legal issues, work under pressure, multi-task, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality and impartiality. Excellent customer service, professional demeanor, and ability to work with diverse stakeholders. Typing speed of 45 words per minute; ability to travel within the circuit and work hours as required (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with potential for additional hours). Licenses and Certifications
Membership in good standing in the Florida Bar required; if not currently a member, membership must be obtained within one year of hire. Valid Florida Driver's License preferred. Other Details
Hybrid-telework eligibility after successful completion of training, six months of continuous service, and management approval. Salary: $61,868.92 annually (based on 12 monthly periods) plus benefits and Florida Retirement System membership. Applicants without Florida Bar membership may be hired at 10% below minimum starting salary with requirement to sit for the exam and obtain good standing within 12 months of hire. HQ: Trial Court Staff Attorneys serve the 20th Judicial Circuit (Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, Glades counties) and may travel or be reassigned within the circuit as needed. Other
