AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineer to join our ITS/Traffic Team. This is an entry-level position and is based out of Edison, New Jersey. For over 50 years, we’ve partnered with public and private clients across the U.S. to deliver infrastructure planning, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture, and program management. Responsibilities Designs and develops plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings for ITS/Traffic design projects and Traffic studies. Organize and carry out engineering studies and planning efforts with clear objectives, contributing to meaningful solutions in a team-driven environment Assist in preparing technical reports and documentation that inform key decisions, under the mentorship of a seasoned engineer. Research alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory requirements to uncover creative, effective solutions for complex engineering challenges. Contribute to writing specifications and permit applications, and gain hands-on experience estimating project timelines, budgets, and material needs Help uphold high-quality standards by reviewing technical work and verifying key details, playing a vital role in delivering safe, reliable, and efficient engineering solutions. Collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, gaining exposure to different perspectives and learning how all the pieces of a project come together. Observe construction activities under the guidance of a more experienced professional, review shop drawings, and learn how engineering comes to life in the field. Performs other such duties deemed necessary by the supervisor(s). Work closely with experienced engineers who will mentor you as you build your technical and professional skills. Qualifications EXPERIENCE: Internship or co-op experience related to traffic engineering, ITS, or transportation planning — preferably with a public agency, DOT, or engineering consultant. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. SPECIAL SKILLS: Familiarity with traffic engineering principles, traffic signal design, or ITS technologies Exposure to tools like Synchro, HCS, AutoCAD, or GIS Basic understanding of MUTCD, AASHTO, or relevant local/state design standards Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS: EIT or FE certification preferred but not required; Candidates working toward professional licensure will be considered favorably.
