Overview Department of Medicine Coder (Coding Specialist II) – Oregon Health & Science University.

This level 2 coding position provides support to the Enterprise Coding Department for coding physician fees and/or facility fees. This role requires experience in coding and certification with AAPC or AHIMA. The base pay range is $31.79/hr - $42.97/hr. Actual pay will be based on skills and experience.

Responsibilities

For Professional Services coding: review clinical documentation, apply correct coding and modifiers to evaluation and management services and non-surgical procedures, ensure documentation supports billed levels/types of service, and comply with Medicare/Medicaid billing regulations, provider documentation guidelines, CPT documentation, and CMS coding guidelines.

For Facility Services coding: review documentation of outpatient diagnostic and ancillary services (diagnostic radiology, pathology, and other facility services), abstract records, code, and submit charges for Facility services rendered at OHSU.

Meet performance standards for accurate and timely submission of charges and coding for professional and facility services.

Collaborate with Enterprise Coding Leadership and billing departments to provide technical expertise on third-party payer and reimbursement issues.

Orient peer coders or new hires to specified coding assignments.

Maintain hourly productivity and quality standards as set by Enterprise Coding and industry standards.

Attend Enterprise Coding and Clinical Department meetings via conference call and Webex.

Handle Coding Work Queue assignments as assigned by management.

Function/Duties of Position

Coding

Review clinical documentation to code in EPIC and other sources to ensure CMS compliance.

Assign correct CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes for facility and/or professional charges, including E&M, diagnostic, procedural, facility services, and/or charge routers.

Establish and maintain procedures for coding and insurance billing for applicable work queues.

Monitor activity for compliance with CMS and Oregon Medical Assistance program (OMAP) laws.

Coordinate billing information ensuring completeness and accuracy.

Maintain open communication with coding supervisor and team leads regarding coding issues and priorities.

Develop and disseminate written procedures to improve billing and coding processes; train, support, orient, and mentor staff as necessary.

Department Support

Serve as a resource to ERC outpatient coding leadership and the coding team on billing policy and procedure issues.

Attend coding meetings and seminars; participate in EC Huddles.

Collaborate with Enterprise Coding Leadership to develop procedures that improve billing and documentation processes.

Make recommendations and implement remedial actions for identified problems.

Monitor coding and billing information from newsletters, memos, and transmittals to advise physicians of changes in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS.

Participate in Enterprise Coding education sessions, Kaizen events; maintain CEUs and stay informed of coding trends.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED.

Minimum two years of hospital or professional services experience reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical records using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding;

Coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC; or equivalent certification.

Active AHIMA membership may be required for some positions.

Preferred Qualifications

Accredited Coding Program: AAPC Boot Camp, AHIMA Coding Boot Camp.

Knowledge of OPPS guidelines and CPT Inpatient/Outpatient coding guidelines, CCI edits, and medical necessity requirements.

Experience using an EMR, such as EPIC; knowledge of 3M encoder.

Course work in anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, CPT and ICD-10-CM coding.

Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, Federal Register, and state/federal billing laws.

Proficiency with word processing and Excel; strong verbal and written communication skills.

Team player with ability to work with physicians, nurses, and administrative management.

Must be able to pass internal coding test.

Additional Details

Days of work are variable and could include rotating weekend days.

This position is telecommuting.

Department core hours are Monday – Friday, 5am–10pm (with some flexibility).

Regularly scheduled work hours are required within core hours.
