Overview
As part of the EP Database Platform team, the Senior DBA – Sybase will own, modernize, and automate mission-critical SAP Sybase ASE environments that power enterprise applications (including fulfilment and distribution management). You’ll be responsible for availability, performance, security, and observability across large-scale fleets—partnering closely with engineering, architecture, SRE, and application delivery teams. Key Responsibilities
Operate & Optimize Sybase ASE (primarily 16.x+): server configuration, database layout, tempdb strategy, log/space management, partitioning, filegroups/devices, and I/O alignment. Performance tuning—instance, database, and SQL: leverage MDA tables (mon*), sp_sysmon, showplan/statistics, optimizer hints, index design, and workload baselining; remediate regressions and eliminate hotspots. Backup Restore: design/maintain ASE latency monitoring, and regular backup/restore and dump/load, point-in-time. Automation at scale: create reliable runbooks and pipelines using Unix shell (bash/ksh), Python, Ansible, cron/systemd timers, and Git-based CI/CD for schema changes, refreshes, checks, and patching. Monitoring & Observability: build actionable dashboards/alerts (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana); implement health checks, query/lock monitors, and capacity forecasts. Security & Compliance: implement hardening, auditing, least-privilege roles, secrets management, and OS/DB patch governance. Support & Collaboration: provide support in an on-call rotation, lead RCAs, mentor engineers, and align designs with enterprise architecture and standards. Minimum Qualifications
2 years of experience working on project(s) involving the implementation of solutions applying development life cycles (SDLC) through iterative agile development 2 years experience working with any of the following: frontend technologies (user interface/user experience), middleware (microservices and application programming interfaces), database technologies, or DevOps Bachelors in computer science, computer information systems, or related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree) and 2 years of experience in software development or a related field Preferred Skills/Education
2 years of experience writing technical documentation in a software environment and developing and implementing business systems within an organization Administering SAP Sybase ASE in 24×7 production environments. Strong Unix/Linux (RHEL/AIX/Solaris): OS internals, filesystems/LVM, networking, shell scripting. Solid SQL/T-SQL (procedures, triggers, bulk-load, bcp/isql/sqsh) and change control discipline. ASE 16.x deep knowledge (optimizer, parallelism, page/row compression, tempdb strategies). Experience with SAP IQ, ETL integrations, or migrations involving Sybase. Observability at scale (Grafana/Prometheus exporters, log/trace pipelines, SLO/SLA design). Security hardening frameworks (e.g., CIS), LDAP/Kerberos integration, auditing.
