The Medical Assistant/Certified Endoscope Reprocessor Technician (MA/CER Tech) is primarily a medical assistant who has expanded their role and knowledge to provide coverage and on-site support for the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes. The MA/CER Tech is required to obtain certification within the first year of employment and recertify as an endoscope technician annually through continuing education requirements. The MA/CER Tech will contribute to safe, quality and fiscally responsible cleaning of endoscopes per manufacturer and organizational instructions and adhere to all infection control policies at BIDMC. Occasional travel to Boston for training/competency may be required.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities

Performs all duties of a medical assistant, including vital signs, height and weight, EKGs, phlebotomy, point of care testing, and assisting during routine procedures. Maintains clean, organized patient care areas and supports patient flow. Prepares schedules and charts for clinical activities; escorts patients to ancillary areas as needed; may answer and screen telephone calls.

Reviews medication lists in the electronic medical record for final review by licensed practitioners. May retrieve Schedule VI and OTC medications under supervision; does not perform licensed personnel duties, such as drawing up medications or administering medications.

Monitors, orders, and maintains medical equipment and supplies for scope reprocessing; ensures cleanliness, sterilization, stock, and expiration date compliance.

Reprocesses and disinfects equipment and supplies per protocol.

Conducts quality assurance measures and maintains QA documentation.

Transports equipment and supplies to and from CPD as needed per infection control guidelines.

Maintains working knowledge of department and industry standards for equipment, processes and protocols.

Addresses damage/repair of instrumentation upon arrival into the decontamination area and reports activities to supervisor/manager.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required.

MA, EMT, CNA or LNA certificate, or an Associate Degree in Medical Assisting, or at least 5 months of direct patient care experience in a clinical or research setting (e.g., MA, PCT, CNA; nursing or medical student with one clinical rotation).

CER certification within the first year of employment.

1-3 years of related work experience.

Attention to detail; ability to function in a fast-paced environment.

Basic computer familiarity and ability to navigate web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of hospital, infection control and medical terminology; phlebotomy certificate.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Work requires close attention to tasks; occasional exposure to adverse conditions; routine is consistent with situational judgment for events several times a week.

Daily:

Exposure to dust, gases, fumes, steam, chemicals. Personal protective equipment required (respirator, earplugs, mask, gloves, eyewear, etc.).

Health Care Status:

HCW1: Regular contact with patients and staff in close proximity.

Sensory Requirements:

Visual tasks, monitor use, and attention to detail within close work.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds frequently; continuous standing and moving; long periods of standing; repetitive motion; occasional keyboard use.
