Overview
The Speech Pathologist (SP Per Diem) functions under the direction of the Chief Speech Pathologist to provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for patients across the lifespan, from pediatrics through geriatrics, within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This role requires advanced theoretical and applied expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions, including augmentative communication needs, developmental speech and language disorders, acquired cognitive and language disorders, fluency, voice, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria. The Speech Pathologist practices autonomously and serves as a consultant and educator to physicians, therapy specialists, educational professionals, and community service providers. The position also involves coordination with primary care teams and service providers, as well as managing insurance authorizations to ensure continuity of care.
Responsibilities
Provide evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with communication, cognitive, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and evidence-based practice.
Deliver therapy services across pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
Serve as a resource and consultant to physicians, therapists, educators, and community agencies.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity and quality of care.
Provide education and counseling to patients, families, and caregivers regarding communication and swallowing strategies.
Participate in staff training, orientation, and continuing education programs.
Document evaluations, progress, and treatment outcomes in compliance with department standards and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate care with external providers and manage insurance authorizations.
Stay current with research, best practices, and professional guidelines in speech-language pathology.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
California Licensed Speech Pathologist
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology
Completed Clinical Fellowship Year
Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation
Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to the patient and/or family members
Knowledge of treatment responses, typical length of stay, and appropriate vs. inappropriate treatment for each patient
Ability to establish programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient
Ability to recognize need for program modification
Ability to document pertinent behaviors in daily progress notes
Knowledge of home programs and organizing into individualized family programs
Ability to report to the referring physician regarding patient diagnosis, skills, and prognosis using appropriate terminology
Ability to maintain patient records and process billing forms and treatment authorizations promptly and accurately
Ability to maintain an accurate schedule and personal workload accounts
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, including attendance at weekly meetings
Knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments
Ability to assume responsibility for other therapists\' patients on short notice
Ability to communicate effectively with other therapists
Ability to supervise student interns and medical students as required
Knowledge of community resources

Experience in an acute care setting with complex patient populations
