Medical Director, Center for Surgical Optimization
ChristianaCare, a nationally recognized leader in healthcare, is seeking an experienced physician leader for the role of Medical Director, Center for Surgical Optimization. The Medical Director will oversee Surgical Services at Christiana Hospital (Newark, DE) and Wilmington Hospital (Wilmington, DE), guiding a multidisciplinary team to advance surgical excellence through strategic leadership, collaboration, and patient-centered care.
Responsibilities
Oversee Surgical Services at Christiana Hospital and Wilmington Hospital
Lead a multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, and staff
Set strategic goals, develop evidence-based policies and protocols, and ensure compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory standards
Coordinate across surgical subspecialties, perioperative teams, and community partners to enhance care delivery
Develop and implement initiatives such as ERAS, prehabilitation, and recovery-at-home programs; monitor outcomes and disparities; advance patient access, trust, and satisfaction
Mentor and provide clinical guidance for complex cases; promote staff development and education
Lead improvement projects with measurable impact; report results to executive leadership; collaborate with IT and operations to enhance workflows and ROI
Qualifications
Board-certified MD or DO in Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, or Surgery
5+ years of clinical experience in anesthesia, hospital medicine, or surgery
2+ years of administrative experience in perioperative management
Active staff membership in ChristianaCare Health System Medical-Dental Staff (Anesthesiology, Medicine, or Surgery)
Position Details
0.50 FTE protected administrative time and 0.50 FTE clinical responsibilities
Partner with surgical, anesthesia, and medical leadership to set strategic goals and ensure quality, safety, and regulatory compliance

Annual Compensation Range: $102,502.40 - $10,249,990.40
The compensation range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith estimate for full-time hours in this specialty. Actual compensation will depend on factors including market value, experience, and qualifications. The range may include productivity incentives, value-based incentives, and other compensation components based on hours, call coverage, and other factors.
