Emory Hospital Midtown / Winship
Responsibilities
Prepares and stains cytologic material for routine procedures; evaluates examination results for validity and reports results as prescribed by standard procedures.
May prepare specimens for cytopathologic examination.
Evaluates cytologic material for carcinoma or other diagnoses and completes all daily assigned screening.
Reviews quality of staining and the adequacy of the specimen to support an adequate diagnosis.
In complex cases, evaluates all information available and determines whether analysis results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist.
Assists the Pathologist and Radiologist on fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures and is competent in giving an adequacy assessment.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical lab science or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelor’s degrees will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of cytotechnology or if science and math coursework meet the requirements of the certifying agency.
Education Exception: A bachelor’s degree may be waived for a Cytotechnologist who was ASCP certified prior to the bachelor’s degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.
At least two years of experience. Experience in Gynecological, Non-gynecological and FNA cytology preferred.
Certification as CT (ASCP) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology which meets Georgia's Department of Human Resources requirements.
