Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Health System Director, IACUC.
The Director of the Division of IACUC Administration is responsible for providing administrative oversight of all activities within the Division and within the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and for collaborating and coordinating with the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee (IACUC) to ensure compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as well as external/federal regulatory guidelines, policies & procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. The director further oversees IACUC protocol review and compliance processes and supervises all aspects of protocol submissions and review and supports the research community in their research activities involving animals. The Director reports to the Animal Care and Use Program Institutional Official.
Job Responsibilities
IACUC Office and IACUC Committee
Lead and manage all resources of the IACUC Office, identifying and addressing any resource needs to optimize operations. Develop and implement efficient office procedures and processes to streamline pre-reviews of protocol submissions. Oversee office staff performance, providing mentorship, support, and conducting regular evaluations. Collaborate closely with the IACUC Chair and Committee members to enhance the review process, ensuring IACUC compliance with applicable regulations and institutional policies.
Inspections / compliance monitoring
Coordinate and oversee federally mandated as well as for-cause inspections or audits of animal facilities and animal procedure locations, ensuring compliance with all relevant institutional, local, state and federal regulations. Assist the committee and coordinate IACUC investigations of animal welfare concerns. Verify concerns reported to the IACUC and assist the committee as they devise corrective actions, overseeing their implementation. Draft regulatory reports as required.
Research Navigator System
Serve as Business owner of the Research Navigator IACUC system and work closely with Medical Center IT to ensure its functionality and suitability for supporting all aspects of IACUC protocol and amendment life cycle (preparation, submission, review, approval, communication, metrics and record keeping).
Program Accreditation
Oversee the semi-annual inspections of all animal care and use locations described in the NYU Grossman School of Medicines OLAW Assurance and USDA registration. Collaborate with Division of Comparative Medicine leadership to main full AAALAC accreditation, including relevant activities associated with preparation of the ACUP program description and preparations for site visits and addressing findings
Policy and Guidelines
Develop, revise, and update institutional policies for animal care and use, ensuring compliance with the latest local, state and federal standards, guidances and
policies.
Research Community Engagement and Training
Meet with investigators to review concerns, answer questions, and identify procedures that may deviate from those originally approved by the IACUC. Oversee the orientation and training of new IACUC members and the IACUC orientation lecture for new researchers . Inform the research community about changes to regulations, guidelines or policies pertaining to the use of laboratory animals to foster a culture of compliance. Serve as an informational resource for investigators, IACUC members and OSR leadership regarding regulatory issues and the status of protocols.
Perform other duties as specified by the Animal Care and Use Program Institutional Official
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify you must have a Bachelors Degree required. Master's Degree in Health Administration, or in a related field. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in project management and with expertise in the conduct of large complex multi-investigator research projects. Five years of IACUC administration experience. Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) or eligibility for certification after one year. Should have expert knowledge of regulatory standards (USDA, OLAW, AAALAC), IACUC functions and compliance processes, animal welfare and ethical research principles (3Rs). Should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact productively with leadership, faculty and staff to identify and resolve problems. Excellent project and program management skills. Strong communication skills and relationship/team building skills. Excellent judgement and reasoning ability enabling problem-solving and issue resolution, with a variety of options in varying situations. Ability to work independently, take initiative and make decisions with in-depth understanding. Responsible for setting and meeting department deadlines in alignment with the NYU Langone Health Animal Care and Use Program and Office of Science and Research goals. Complete understanding of a project life cycle methodology. Requires strong judgment and excellent project management skills. Ability to proficiently use project management, word processing and spreadsheet applications. Effective problem solving skills to assist in detecting potential issues and issue resolution. Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present to the target audience
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree with at least 5-7 years of IACUC administration experience, preferably in a role of IACUC Director or Manager. Demonstrated proficiency with IACUC protocol submission and review software and ability to work closely with Medical Center Information Technology on IACUC / research administration software platform. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work effectively and lead within matrixed program and project teams. Strong presentation and writing skills are a priority.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $146,384.38 - $252,513.46 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
