Overview
Title: Assistant Professor (Agricultural Economic Policy) Location: Hilo, HI Hiring Unit: College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR), Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) Position Type: 11 Month, Permanent, Full Time, Tenure Track Date Posted: October 8, 2025 Closing Date: Continuous - application review begins December 5, 2025 Salary: Minimum Starting Salary $89,868; commensurate with education and experience. Workload: 45% Instruction (including 25% Extension and 20% Academic), 35% Research, 20% Service; may be adjusted based on operational needs. Instruction (45%) and Extension Instruction (25%): Provide extension leadership in agricultural economic analysis to support a resilient and thriving agricultural sector in the State of Hawai‘i, in partnership with private, non-profit, federal, state, and county agencies and stakeholders. Maintain an active extension program focusing on opportunities through new and innovative technologies to build resilience and growth in agriculture and rural communities; expand local and global market opportunities; support public and private decision-making; connect stakeholders to federal and state grant and support programs. Develop audience-appropriate extension materials, such as training modules and decision support tools, for adopting new technologies in Hawaii’s agriculture and food systems, in partnership with the Agricultural Finance Agent, other agricultural economics faculty, and/or state of Hawai‘i agricultural economists. Obtain internal and external grant funding to support the extension program. Academic Instruction (20%): Teach one to two undergraduate and/or graduate courses annually in agricultural policy, trade and market or value-added analysis; contribute to teaching and mentoring CTAHR students (graduate committees, capstone projects, internships, mentored research, guest lectures, field trips). Co-manage CTAHR’s Agribusiness Certificate Program (curriculum development, teaching, advising, program assessment and improvement). Research (35%): Develop a Hawaiʻi-focused, extramurally funded research program using quantitative modeling to analyze agricultural sector policies, emphasizing sustainability and resilience of food production systems and natural resources; provide timely, policy-relevant research for decision-making in Hawaiʻi. Obtain extramural funding; publish scholarly outputs in academic journals. Service (20%): Participate in Department, College, and University service; engage with local or national professional societies; contribute to Hawaiʻi communities through policy, systems, and environmental change (PSE) via boards, advisory roles, or testimony as appropriate. Minimum qualifications
Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or closely related field with preparation in extension, research, and instruction as described above. Demonstrated ability to conduct applied agricultural policy research related to technology adoption, sustainability, resilience, and economic modeling for policy impact evaluation. Proven ability to work effectively with community organizations, government agencies, farmers, stakeholders, and industry representatives. Excellent written and verbal communication skills evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and refereed presentations. Ability to teach agricultural economics and policy courses. Demonstrated ability to collaborate on or lead interdisciplinary, academically oriented research; professional conduct in meetings and collaborations. Desirable qualifications
Record of scholarly research in agricultural economic policy analysis. Ability to obtain and manage competitive extramural funding for applied research and/or extension. Experience with policy analysis for small- to medium-scale tropical or subtropical agriculture, insular areas, and rural development. Experience teaching online or hybrid courses. Strong collaborative engagement to develop research impact and policy outcomes in communities, agencies, and the environment. Familiarity with Hawai‘i and U.S. legislative and executive processes, preferably through experience with USDA or related agricultural organizations.
