and play a pivotal role in shaping the technical vision and architecture of core backend systems that power the Spotify Home page. You’ll work on foundational components that enable the larger Home experience, such as Home Config and Home’s Experimentation strategy. You’ll collaborate with engineering peers to rethink the design of systems created years ago, adapting them to meet the needs of gen recs, agents, and an improved Home experience for Spotify users. This is a staff-level individual contributor role, offering the opportunity to shape the direction of Home loading paradigms, page serving, content filtering, and content storage. What You'll Do
Partner closely with Experimentation Platform, Surface Insights, CoreX, and Home PZN teams to create an experimentation strategy that elevates Home’s online evaluation practices. Build relationships with Staff+ engineers across PZN and Experience missions to identify problems and opportunities for product innovation. Create Home Experimentation strategies to ensure trustworthy online evaluations for stakeholders. Innovate in Home’s dynamic configuration methodology for experiment variants and baseline product experience. Support teams within Home Foundations – Nexus, Home Content Journey, and HEAT – in system and backend engineering needs. Identify tooling to improve home recs explainability, debugging, and reliability. Mentor backend engineers and influence technical strategy by setting high standards in methodology, reproducibility, and collaboration. Prototype and productionize new approaches for Home experiences. Who You Are
You’re a current Staff Engineer with 1+ years at this level, consistently taking on responsibilities aligned with the role. You have extensive experience designing system architectures that include machine learning models as key components. You’re comfortable debugging experiment configurations from an engineering and statistical perspective, understanding concepts like confidence intervals, p-values, and power. You are familiar with different experiment setups: isolated vs. overlapping, interaction effects, holdout strategies. You understand end-to-end system architectures that include machine learning models to enable larger products. You have a bias to action, building MVPs, prototypes, and illustrating ideas through concise documents to drive initiatives. You are accountable to senior tech leadership for meeting product and technology objectives and managing expectations. You have successfully led technical initiatives and shaped strategic directions through cross-functional collaboration. You possess excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, operating effectively at the intersection of science and engineering. Where You'll Be
Flexible work location within North America, with collaboration within the EST time zone. The US base salary range is $194,000 - $277,000 plus equity. Benefits include health insurance, parental leave, 401(k), meal allowance, paid time off, and holidays. These ranges may be updated in the future. Spotify is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We welcome your personal experiences, perspectives, and background, which help us innovate and thrive.
