The University of Tennessee Southern (UT Southern) is a small public university established in 2021. Located in Pulaski, UT Southern is the fourth undergraduate campus in the UT System and the only public four-year institution between Chattanooga and Memphis. The campus is about 70 miles south of Nashville and 40 miles north of Huntsville, Alabama. UT Southern offers low student–teacher ratios and a private, small-college experience with the resources of a land-grant university system. Nearly 30 academic programs are available through the schools of business, education, arts and humanities, mathematics and sciences, nursing, and social sciences. The UT Southern Firehawks compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference with multiple nationally competitive teams. The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees approved UT Southern’s inaugural five-year strategic plan: Igniting Excellence. The plan emphasizes academic excellence, student experience and success, and campus and community engagement. UT Southern’s vision is to be a hub for education, community leadership, and workforce development in south-central Tennessee and a national model for rural higher education. The mission includes providing undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs grounded in liberal arts and sciences, promoting a diverse and globally conscious learning community, and serving the region through educational, social, and cultural programs and community outreach.
