Position Overview The University Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of the OHSU community, including all OHSU members, patients, and visitors, as well as all OHSU resources, facilities, and property within the Officer's assigned area(s) of responsibility. The Officer may carry out these duties under direct supervision, but will also be capable of effectively carrying out these responsibilities with minimal or no direct supervision when necessary.
The University Police Officer is trained in accordance with applicable DPSST requirements, applicable state law, and OHSU Public Safety departmental policy to exercise the authorities of a police officer. The Officer will act at all times in support of the University's mission and goals, and is expected to exercise authorities in support of the University, and in a manner consistent with the University's strategic plans, policies, and culture. The Officer is expected to demonstrate enthusiastic support for the DPS and University policies at all times and to continually improve partnership between the DPS and other University departments and external agencies while ensuring campus safety.
The Officer will follow the established chain of command by bringing information, requests, concerns, etc., to the immediate supervisor before moving to higher levels when possible.
The Officer is expected to adhere to the following:
Be a role model for all OHSU core competencies, including providing excellent customer service
Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings and keep required certifications current
Exercise authorities within the limits of University policy and at the discretion of management
Follow all safety guidelines and be knowledgeable of applicable policies and directives
Perform additional and/or modified duties as assigned
Complete proficiency evaluations as required to meet regulatory or accreditation standards
Maintain qualifications for commissioning and certification as a University Police Officer
Complete all required reports and paperwork
Interview and/or obtain statements from witnesses, victims, suspects, or others as appropriate
Maintain a personal log of on-duty activities
The University Police Officer is subject to recall at any time to assist in emergencies or for other DPS staffing needs.
Function/Duties of Position Incident Response & Investigation
Ensure a safe environment by responding to and/or investigating calls for assistance, reported crimes, alarm activations, fires, hazardous materials, and other situations as directed
Observe conditions that could impact University operations and take preventive actions
Protect the scene and evidence related to incidents and perform proactive security checks
Respond to medical emergencies and campus injuries with appropriate first aid
Prepare timely, complete reports and maintain records per policies
Identify and address security concerns and report them as required
Remind and maintain recall capabilities for emergencies
Other duties as assigned
Patrol & Enforcement
Actively patrol areas on foot, bicycle, vehicle, or via CCTV
Monitor facilities, grounds, and parking areas
Issue citations as necessary for policy or legal violations
Engage with the campus community to enforce policies as directed
Other responsibilities as assigned
Community Relations/Customer Service
Respond to non-emergency requests for assistance from the OHSU community
Provide information and safety support, including bilingual and culturally relevant services as needed
Provide security assessments and escort services as requested
Lock/Unlock facilities per procedures and answer general safety questions
Build positive community relations and practice COP/POP methodologies
Attend cultural competency events and build partnerships
Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma AND meet current DPSST minimum standards for employment as a Law Enforcement Officer
Eligible for DPSST Basic Police Officer certification within one year of employment
Successful completion of the Field Training and Evaluation Program
Strong interpersonal communication and cross-cultural competency
Ability to exercise independent judgment and learn Oregon statutes and laws
Ability to follow policies and procedures and complete detailed incident reports
Basic computer skills
Must be able to perform essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Additional Requirements
United States citizenship required for DPSST eligibility within 1 year of hire
Criminal history must be clean per DPSST and OHSU requirements
Valid Oregon driver’s license and ability to pass background, psychological, medical, and physical agility screenings
Compliance with Code of Conduct and applicable policies
Law Enforcement Code of Ethics
Preferred Qualifications
College degree in a law-enforcement/public safety field
DPSST Basic Police certification or equivalent
Law enforcement experience in a certified/commissioned role
Multilingual abilities
First Aid/CPR
Basic Police Officer Certificate

Pay Range: $38.46 - $49.14 per hour (Commensurate with qualifications, experience and internal equity)
