TITLE: Public Safety Officer II (PSO II)
REPORTS TO:
Associate Director of Public Safety SALARY:
Grade 7 (base pay $15.30 - $21.30 per hour) ROLE:
The Public Safety Officer II is a non-commissioned security officer responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the campus community's people, buildings, and property. This is a high-visibility, service-oriented position of public trust. This position is for the 11:00 pm - 7:00 am shift. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide visible security and protective services through routine patrols and assist with directions and information for the campus community and public. Interact courteously and tactfully with all individuals, maintaining professionalism in all contacts. Enforce college rules, policies, and state laws, including appropriate use of physical force when necessary, and document incidents properly. Work independently with limited supervision. Understand and respond appropriately to emergencies, employing critical decision-making and tact. Coordinate emergency responses with local agencies such as police and fire departments. Provide first aid and assist with transportation of injured persons when needed. Support students in crisis, providing resources and support as appropriate. Work with Student Services on housing and access issues. Assist in investigations and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Be knowledgeable about higher education security issues, including Title IX and the Clery Act, and act as a Campus Security Authority. Maintain situational awareness and communicate threats or incidents to leadership. Complete reports and manage databases related to incidents, arrests, and other records. Mentor and train new officers as a Field Training Officer. Maintain communication via radio with colleagues and external agencies, and respond to calls for service. Report unsafe conditions and equipment issues promptly. Respond to lockouts and grant access to authorized personnel. Participate in ongoing training and development. Conduct security patrols in various conditions, including darkness and weather challenges. Apply for and obtain a Special Police Commission within specified timeframes. Maintain certifications such as CPR, AED, and others as required. Make arrests and handle disorderly conduct, exercising discretion and understanding legal procedures. Testify in court regarding incidents when necessary. Manage crowd control during events and emergencies, respecting First Amendment rights. Handle college bank deposits responsibly. Wear issued uniform and carry credentials during shifts. Perform operational duties routinely during each shift. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should be able to perform all essential duties, including walking or standing for long periods and navigating stairs. Reasonable accommodations are available for disabilities. High school diploma or GED required. Security experience preferred but not mandatory. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain calm during emergencies. Proficiency with computers, radios, and phones. Certification in first aid, CPR, and tourniquets required. Ability to become certified as a crowd manager. Successful medical, drug, and background screening. No criminal record. Valid Maryland driver’s license required. Ability to walk on various terrains, including stairs and uneven surfaces. This position is not classified as essential but may require work during emergencies or severe weather.
