Overview

The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and Institute for Computational and Data Sciences at Penn State (University Park, PA) announce an opening for a Research Professor to contribute to and lead research and model development that advance our fundamental understanding of high-impact mesoscale and microscale atmospheric phenomena, such as convective storms, mesoscale convective systems, tropical cyclones, and orographic rainbands. Work arrangements:

Approval of remote and hybrid work is not guaranteed regardless of work location. For additional information on remote work at Penn State, see Notice to Out of State Applicants. This is a term position; length of the term will be discussed during the interview process. Continuation past the term length discussed will be based on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding. Position specifics The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at Penn State fosters advanced interdisciplinary computation and data-enabled collaborative science. ICDS supports a community of scholars with access to Roar, our advanced research computing infrastructure, and a cadre of technical experts, research scientists, and engineers. Responsibilities

Lead the development and application of numerical models for investigating high-impact mesoscale and microscale atmospheric processes. Design and conduct high-resolution simulations of convective storms, mesoscale convective systems, tropical cyclones, and orographic rainbands. Publish research findings in leading scientific journals and present results at national and international conferences. Collaborate with Penn State faculty and students. Serve as principal investigator or co-investigator on externally funded research projects. Requirements

A Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a closely related field. Ten or more years of experience in high-resolution numerical modeling of mesoscale and microscale atmospheric processes. Nationally and/or internationally recognized expertise in convective storm and tropical cyclone dynamics, with an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications. Demonstrated leadership in model development (e.g., cloud-resolving or large-eddy simulation). Strong communication and writing skills, and ability to collaborate across disciplines. Ability to mentor graduate students and to lead externally funded research programs. The candidate submission should include a cover letter describing interest and career goals, a CV with publication list, and contact information for up to three references. Review of applications will begin immediately. Term and funding This position is funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of renewal pending available funding and satisfactory performance.
