Departmental Overview The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing offers competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliates. In addition to 30 sports clubs, the department provides a wide range of recreational activities and equipment.

Position Summary Involves instructional or program activities related to recreation, leisure, and fitness in an accredited environment. Provides first aid and emergency care as necessary, and responds to user/customer needs. Works for Adventures Adult programs and serves as a dockhand, supporting boat rental and program customers.

Responsibilities

Provides advanced or specialized activity support to program participants and rental customers, individually or in groups.

Provides land and water support to keep customers safe on and off the water in remote locations and under moderate to occasional severe outdoor conditions.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.

Interacts with recreational program participants in a positive manner.

Assists instructors with setup and takedown of their courses.

May lead other dockhands and provide guidance and instruction to other program instructors on best practices, procedures, methods and techniques on program and survival activities.

May certify participants in various activities.

Keeps current on teaching methods, techniques and skills through continuing education and certification.

Participates in required professional development activities.

Required Qualifications

Leadership and interpersonal skills for a lead capacity; ability to work effectively across the organization internally and externally.

Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, creative problem-solving in varied environments.

Ability to work effectively across all organizational levels.

Client service mindset, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.

Highly effective verbal communication skills.

High school diploma or equivalent certification.

First Aid/CPR/AED required within 3 months of hire.

Safe Power Handling required within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with basic computer applications.

Knowledge of and/or ability to quickly learn campus policies and procedures.

CDC Heads Up Concussion Training.

Red Cross CPR.

Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package, please visit the UC Berkeley Compensation & Benefits website. The university provides a salary range and notes that offers are based on qualifications and experience. The budgeted hourly range is $22.22 - $27.00.
