Responsibilities This role can be based in Scottsdale, AZ or Glen Allen, VA offices or neighboring states, and underwrites and maintains renewal portfolio in assigned book of business, including post-issuance transactions (policy changes, cancellations, reinstatements, reinsurance, etc.). Underwrites renewal business within authority to maintain profitability per rate and retention company standards. Monitor renewal production, profitability, and maintain agency relationships. Use underwriting authority to independently decide on renewal accounts; establish terms and pricing and negotiate with retail agents. Review and underwrite fast-track renewals within granted authority; provide guidance to associate underwriting team. Make sound risk and pricing decisions to achieve profitable loss ratios. Maintain underwriting quality score of 90% or greater; document files to support acceptability and pricing per guidelines. Achieve designated customer service standards. Provide detailed guidance to the associate underwriting team to ensure policy delivery aligns with quoted terms and conditions. Review all post-transaction requests for acceptability within authority; review inspections for consistency with underwriting information and take action as needed. Utilize underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, classifications, and rates; review policy audits and escalate to leadership as needed. Assist with training, mentoring, and coaching of less experienced team members. Proficient knowledge of Commercial General Liability, Commercial Property, and Commercial Excess Liability; assess exposure and form attachment decisions on renewal accounts. Take on special projects to advance underwriting knowledge; advise new business on market conditions, trends, and state-specific nuances that may impact decisions to territory teams. Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with internal and external customers to maintain standards of excellence. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. Advanced professional insurance coursework is a benefit. Minimum of 5 years of commercial lines experience; Excess and Surplus lines experience preferred. Ability to exhibit informal leadership across the team. Basic knowledge of Windows applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience in a paperless environment and with online underwriting tools (SAGE, Silver Plume, Reference Connect, etc.) is preferred.
