Description

There is an immediate opening for a Deputy City Attorney in the Real Property Division of the Real Estate Branch for an experienced litigation attorney with experience handling real estate disputes including inverse condemnation, property damage, unlawful detainer, quiet title actions, and other real estate related claims. For current City Attorney employees this will be a lateral transfer.

As one of several Real Estate Branch teams, the Real Property Division litigates real estate disputes primarily relating to direct and inverse condemnation, property damage, unlawful detainer, landlord-tenant, and quiet title actions. In addition, the Division provides legal advice and services to the Mayor, the City Council, and various City departments and staff on a broad range of real estate matters, including but not limited to issues relating to the City’s ownership, acquisition, disposition, and use of real property. These services include drafting leases, contracts, ordinances, and other transactional documents.

Duties And Responsibilities

The attorney assigned to this position will primarily litigate cases that fall within the scope of the Division’s practice area as described above. The position also includes advising City departments, staff, officials, and consultants on a broad range of real estate matters, appearing at various commission, committee, and City Council meetings, and the selected attorney will work closely with other attorneys and support staff in the Real Property Division.

Requirements

Minimum three years of civil litigation practice in California and/or Federal courts. Licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California. First-chair civil trial experience, including jury trials, is highly desired. Experience with inverse condemnation, eminent domain, property damage claims, title disputes, and landlord-tenant disputes is highly desired. Strong legal, analytical, written & oral communication, advocacy, and problem-solving skills.

Current Location

City Hall East, 200 N. Main Street, Los Angeles. Position is subject to assignment at any location within the County of Los Angeles.

Probation

Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a two year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successfully completing this probationary period will result in tenure with the office.

Classification

Internal applicants: Placement in this position will be as a lateral transfer with the selected candidate assuming the position in their current classification.
