Overview: This position will report directly to the Sr. Director of Sanitation and will have the overall responsibility to lead the implementation of Boar’s Head multi-year Sanitation Strategy, across approximately five USDA regulated facilities.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in food science, Engineering, Microbiology, or related area
10 years or proven experience in managing Sanitation Programs in USDA / FDA / GFSI regulated facilities
PCQI preferred
6 Sigma certification preferred
Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Sanitation Programs and Hygienic Design: Serve as Subject Matter Expert ensuring interpretation, application, and compliance with external requirements (USDA, FSIS, FDA, GFSI, OSHA) and customers’ requirements.
Support development and review of Hygiene and Hygienic Design Standards and site-specific procedures to meet Boar’s Head Sanitation Standard requirements.
Lead deployment of Hygiene and Hygienic Design Standards, driving user adoption through training, education, and metrics data analysis.
Collaborate with regional and site groups to ensure hygienic design assessment, testing, commissioning, qualifications, validations, and verifications.
Participate in Greenfield/Brownfield, CAPEX, Innovation, and Expansion Projects as needed.
Develop site resources via training methods (modules, hands-on, case studies) for various audiences.
Work with Boar’s Head chemicals, cleaning supplies, and IPM providers to support the Sanitation Strategy and maximize service performance; monitor trend analysis and address issues.
Food Safety and External Standards: Develop processes with corporate and plant functions to proactively prevent food safety risks; apply external standards including GFSI (BRC/SQF), Codex, FSSC2200, HACCP, GMPs & Prerequisites; incorporate applicable regulatory requirements.
Establish microbiological preventive controls and lead incident reviews; apply RCA and data analysis to deliver sustainable CAPA, short- and long-term solutions.
Support verification and validation of cleaning and sanitation processes; review studies, risk assessments, data trends, CAPA closure.
Regulatory and Auditing Schemes – Requirements Proficiency: Integrate USDA/FDA/FSMA requirements into plant procedures; knowledge of GFSI schemes (BRC, SQF, FSSC 2200) and GMP prerequisites.
Microbiology and HACCP – Requirements Proficiency: Support incident reviews for microbiological OOS/FMs; apply RCA and data analysis for cleaning, sanitation, hygienic design, and product disposition; verify and validate cleaning processes.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to present information effectively to all levels of management; define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and communicate department objectives clearly.
Adaptability to unforeseen circumstances and conflict resolution skills.
Sanitation and Hygienic Design Proficiency:
Fundamental sanitation requirements (MSS, SSOP, MVV) and GFSI (BRC/SQF), USDA, FDA, FSMA.
Hygienic Design Principles and Standards (AMI, 3A, NSF, EHEDGE, ANSI, etc.).
Clean-in-place / cleaning systems, equipment relocation, descaling, passivation, and related validation/qualification processes.
Training development using MS Office and related tools; risk mitigation via RCA and FMEA; project review and commissioning (OQ, PQ, DQ, IQ).
Regulatory and Auditing – Proficiency:
Incorporate applicable USDA/FDA/FSMA requirements into plant procedures; knowledge of GFSI schemes; and maintain GMP prerequisites.
Education and Certification (additional):
Training in GMP, HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, SQF is preferred.
Qualifications and Skills:
Proficient in Windows-based PC and Microsoft Office.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to relate to a wide range of constituents.
Flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
Experience using, managing, and sustaining a Master Sanitation System/Program.
Work Environment:
Office, manufacturing, and warehouse environment with exposure to odors, noise, cold, and chemicals.
Physical activities include working with information on a computer, group presentations, and site visits; travel may be required.
