This position serves as a probation officer and requires a current and valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. The incumbent plans, organizes, coordinates and manages the social work services of an operational unit or directs a social work program of limited scope and complexity; and performs other duties as required. This position is located in the First Circuit, Client Services Division, Juvenile Client Services Branch. The primary function of this section is to screen, investigate and dispose of referrals of situations of law violations, legal custody, protective supervision and other types of referrals; provide counseling and other necessary related services to minors and their parents coming under the jurisdiction of the Court. The purpose of this position is to plan, direct, control, coordinate and evaluate the operational activities of the Diversion Unit and Youth Family Resource Center / Pulama `Ia Na Liko; and provide consultation, supervision and training to subordinate probation officers, special probation officers, para-professionals, volunteers and clerical workers if assigned to the unit. In addition, the position is responsible for the overall monitoring of a caseload received from various referral sources. Responsibilities

Provide consultation, supervision and training to subordinate probation officers, special probation officers, para-professionals, volunteers and clerical workers as assigned. Monitor a caseload received from various referral sources. Education and Experience Requirements

Education:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree which included a minimum of twelve (12) semester credit hours in courses such as social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or other related social sciences. Specialized Experience:

Three and one-half (3-1/2) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience which involved utilizing a variety of social work skills and exercising professional judgement in assisting individuals and their families, including assessments, plan development, collaboration with professionals and community agencies, and evaluation of progress. Substitution and Qualifications

Supervisory Aptitude:

For some positions at the Social Worker V level, applicants must possess supervisory aptitude demonstrated by leadership assignments or supervision-focused training and affirmative supervisory potential. Substitution Allowed: 1) A bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker II or six (6) months of experience. 2) A master’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker III or one and one-half (1-1/2) years of experience. 3) A Ph.D. in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker IV or two and one-half (2-1/2) years of experience. Non-Qualifying Experience

Experience that does not provide the necessary professional social work concepts and theories, or the required background in the principles, methods, and techniques of professional social work, will not be considered qualifying. Examples of non-qualifying experience include: providing supportive services to other professionals, determining eligibility for public welfare benefits, vocational or psychological counseling, and certain kinds of volunteer or trainee work unless performed under competent professional supervision. Driver’s License:

This position requires a current and valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement:

The position has contact with detainees or residents in juvenile facilities or confinement facilities. Applicants must not have disqualifying records described by 28 CFR 115.17, 115.117, 115.217, and 115.317.
