Duties

Receives criminal pleadings, reviews and examines physical and testimonial evidence, interviews witnesses, investigates and determines whether or not a crime has been committed and the nature of the crime. Handles a felony caseload and complex criminal cases, conducts preliminary hearings and jury trials. Mentors, supervises, evaluates and trains Deputy District Attorneys on all aspects of prosecutorial duties. Appears in court and assists Deputy District Attorneys and judges with calendar management. Assists Deputy District Attorneys on decisions made in cases and in court, including plea dispositions, going to preliminary hearings and going to jury trials. Assists judges with court questions concerning the District Attorney office. Other supervisorial duties as assigned by the District Attorney and/or Chief Deputy District Attorneys. Experience

One (1) year of experience as a Deputy District Attorney IV with Merced County or its equivalent in other agencies. OR Five (5) years of experience in the practice of criminal law with one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity. Education

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited law school. Licenses

Active membership in the State Bar of California. Knowledge of

Legal principles and practices with emphasis on criminal law. Trial and hearing procedures and the rules of evidence. The Penal Code of the State of California. Legal research methods. Principles of supervision and training. Ability to

Coordinate and direct the work of staff to achieve efficiency of operation and meet departmental goals and objectives. Analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence and precedents to legal problems. Present law, facts and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form. Investigate, explain, and write reports on legal matters. Make decisions with little or no guidance on any and all legal issues. Deal effectively and tactfully with the public. Represent the District Attorney with the community and other agencies.
