Overview
James C. Dever III, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina, is recruiting for a permanent Career Law Clerk to begin as soon as possible. The position provides legal research and writing assistance, drafts bench memos, assists with orders and opinions, and communicates with counsel regarding case management and procedural requirements. The Career Law Clerk also performs administrative duties as administrator of chambers, regularly reviews and manages the active case docket, supports the judge’s schedule and administrative needs, trains and assists term law clerks, coordinates with the Clerk of Court, and provides legal and procedural guidance to chambers staff. This position is advertised at the JSP 11 - 14. The court reviews applications on a rolling basis.
Responsibilities
Provide legal research and writing support for the judge. Prepare bench memos, assist with orders and opinions, and communicate with counsel on case management and procedural requirements. Perform chambers administration, manage the active docket, support the judge’s schedule, and assist with administrative requirements. Train and assist term law clerks; coordinate with the Clerk of Court; and offer legal and procedural guidance to chambers staff.
Qualifications
Law school graduate at the time of appointment with strong academic credentials and superior legal research and writing skills. Ability to work independently in a high-volume environment. Prior federal or state clerkship experience or practice in the Eastern District of North Carolina is strongly preferred. Law review and/or moot court participation and a standing within the top 10% of the law school class are preferred.
Conditions of Employment
U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status actively seeking citizenship. Judicial Branch employees are at-will and not subject to competitive service regulations. EFT payroll deposits required. Salary based on experience and qualifications; JSP 12/13/14 level requirements: JSP 12 requires one year of legal work experience and bar membership; JSP 13 requires two years; JSP 14 requires three years with at least two years in the federal judiciary. Background investigation and FBI background check or security clearance may be required.
