Staff Attorney - LGBTQ+ Advocacy Project (Bronx)
Bronx Legal Services, part of Legal Services NYC, seeks a staff attorney for the LGBTQ+ Advocacy Project in the Bronx. The staff attorney will provide comprehensive legal services with a primary focus on health law and health access and a secondary focus on family law and intimate partner violence. The staff attorney’s primary role is direct representation in various civil matters, with responsibilities including community education, provider education, off-site intake, and outreach, including intake at community health centers that are part of existing medical-legal partnerships. The position reports to the Supervising Attorney of the Public Benefits & LGBTQ Advocacy Units. Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive legal services to LGBTQ+ residents of the Bronx, focusing on health law/health access and family law/IPV. Conduct community education and provider education related to health benefits, housing, and other civil legal needs. Perform off-site intake and outreach, including intake at community health centers within medical-legal partnerships. Represent clients in a wide range of civil matters and pursue actions that improve social determinants of health for LGBTQ+-identified Bronx residents. Qualifications
Admission to the New York State Bar. At least two years of combined experience in one or more of the following practice areas: health/home care, family, or public benefits (non-legal experience will be considered). Prior experience representing LGBTQ+ people. Prior experience representing litigants at administrative hearings and in City, State, or Federal Courts. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and use of a DEIB lens in the project, work, and representation. Ability to adapt quickly and set and achieve goals in an evolving project. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse people. Compassion, patience, and empathy under pressure for clients and partners. Strong teaching, facilitation, education, training, mentoring, and coaching abilities. Belief in the ability to create systemic change and a commitment to advancing equity. Demonstrated passion for social justice and experience working with low-income communities and communities of color. Ability to identify trends in high-volume cases that could be addressed by strategic action or creative interventions. Understanding of intimate partner/domestic violence and trafficking dynamics and their impact on individuals and communities. Strong writing skills with the ability to present complex processes clearly for wide audiences. Excellent organizational skills and comfort with numbers. Experience working with low-income people. Prior health law experience or experience in a medical setting (including medical-legal partnerships), public health, or health policy is strongly preferred. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by Bronx residents is strongly preferred. EEO Statement:
