Overview
Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Pre-Surgical EMG at Elliot Hospital. Full-time, no call. This position requires complete review of medical and surgical history, assessment for risk factors that could potentially lead to anesthesia complications, physical assessment, interpretation of laboratory values, cardiac testing, pulmonary testing and diagnostic imaging. If clinical evaluation reveals that the patient requires further medical optimization to ensure the best surgical outcome and avoid anesthesia complications, the provider will carry out those interventions and re-evaluate for effectiveness. The APP is required to adhere to anesthesia pre-operative guidelines along with any pre-operative workup requested by individual surgeons. This role supports nursing staff who identify possible pre-surgical concerns and staff from medical offices involving chart reviews. When necessary, to clear patients for surgery, the APP will refer to and arrange specialty consultations and follow up on pre-operative recommendations. The APP will collaborate closely with anesthesia and as needed with PCPs and specialty providers including hematology, neurology, pulmonology, nephrology, rheumatology, and cardiology. The APP is responsible for communicating all pertinent patient findings to anesthesia and surgeons prior to surgery. Additionally, the APP will assess the patient’s understanding of the anesthesia and surgical plan and provide education if indicated. Knowledge/Skills
The APP is required to interpret ECG tracing, pulmonary function tests, and lab values, and to understand cardiac stress test and echocardiogram results. The APP should have a thorough understanding of various types of anesthesia and a basic understanding of all procedures for which evaluated patients are to undergo. Strong physical and psychosocial assessments are expected. Work Schedule
