Overview
We're currently looking to hire a Microbiologist, specialized in food testing. This individual will be conducting microbiological analysis of food, beverages, bottled water, and environmental samples for pathogens and indicator organisms. This is a 6 month contract position, with opportunity to extend or convert. Pay rate range: $40-48/hr. Responsibilities
Perform routine and complex microbiological testing of food and environmental samples to detect and quantify pathogens. Use a range of techniques including: Classical culture methods Molecular diagnostics (e.g., PCR, qPCR) Biochemical and serological assays Automated and high-throughput platforms Interpret test results, ensure quality assurance compliance, and report findings in accordance with laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements. Assist in method development, validation, and matrix extension for new food sample types or emerging pathogens. Maintain accurate laboratory records and enter data into Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Follow biosafety, chemical hygiene, and safety protocols during sample handling and analysis. Participate in proficiency testing and quality control programs. Support investigations related to foodborne illness outbreaks and contamination events in collaboration with other units. Stay current with scientific literature, new testing methods, and regulatory updates relevant to food microbiology. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, or a related field (Master’s preferred). Experience in microbiological laboratory testing, preferably in food, environmental, or clinical labs. Familiarity with FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM), ISO, or AOAC methods is a plus. Knowledge of aseptic techniques, microbiological media, pathogen handling, and quality assurance systems (e.g., ISO 17025). Experience with molecular methods such as PCR, qPCR, or ELISA is strongly preferred. Excellent data management and organizational skills. Ability to follow standardized protocols, troubleshoot problems, and work independently or in a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
