Overview
The School of History, Philosophy, and Religion at Oregon State University invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. This position supports the University’s Prosperity Widely Shared initiative and is part of an interdisciplinary hiring plan to recruit a cohort of faculty in the area of Field Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The hired faculty will join a collaborative cohort with mentoring, community-building, and cross-college research opportunities to foster success and advance cutting-edge research and education in robotics and AI with real-world impact. Area of Specialization (AOS) and Areas of Competence (AOC)
AOS: Ethics and Artificial Intelligence (AI); Ethics and Robotics (such as robot ethics, ethics of robotics research, ethics and field robotics, etc.); Ethics and Emerging Technologies. AOC: Applied Ethics; Research Ethics; Social and Political Philosophy. Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities include teaching courses, both in-person and online, to foster critical thinking; conducting research and scholarship that advances the field; cultivating interdisciplinary connections between philosophy and various STEM fields, such as engineering; and developing opportunities for external funding. Teaching will include introductory and advanced classes that provide an intellectual foundation in ethics of robotics and AI, ethics of emerging technologies, and related areas as described in the AOS and AOC. Courses will align with OSU’s core education curriculum and explore issues of power and oppression with respect to emerging technologies. Qualifications and Candidate Profile
