Overview

The University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor in Pure Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, beginning Fall 2026. A PhD in Mathematics is preferred; a PhD in a closely related area will be considered. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by October 1, 2025. Qualifications and department strengths emphasize research in all areas of pure mathematics, with current strengths in algebra, analysis, geometry and topology, and ongoing development of a data science concentration with a strong mathematics component.

Position Summary

Responsibilities include pursuing research in all areas of pure mathematics, potential to supervise PhD and master’s student research, and contributing to department curriculum needs. The department seeks candidates who can contribute to teaching and service; the ability to supervise student research and participate in curriculum development is expected.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain an active research program in pure mathematics with potential for an international reputation and publications in recognized journals.

Contribute to excellence in mathematics education at undergraduate and graduate levels, with strong mentoring, advising, and service potential.

Engage in service to the mathematics program and department; support curriculum delivery and departmental strengths.

Supervise PhD and master’s student research and collaborate on department initiatives, including data science components where appropriate.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Minimum: PhD in Mathematics or closely related field by August 10, 2026.

Preferred: demonstrated or potential publication record; commitment to diverse student participation and success in mathematical sciences; ability to work with diverse communities; commitment to cultivating understanding of New Mexico’s cultures and the university’s mission.

Qualifications (Additional)

Commitment to establishing a research program in pure mathematics with emerging international reputation.

Commitment to excellence in mathematics education and mentoring.

Potential for service to the pure math program and the department; enhance research strengths and curriculum delivery.
