Wrestling - Assistant Coach position at Illahee Middle School during the Winter Season from November 2025 – February 2026. Location: Illahee Middle School. Position Type: Athletics/Activities/Assistant Coach. Date Posted: 7/7/2025. Closing Date: Until Filled. Hours per Day: 2.0 HRS, Season Stipend: $3,313 - $3,995 DOE. Days of the Week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Shift Times: 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm Monday – Thursday; evening events as related to specific sport. Days per Year: 34.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Professional Development and Leadership: The assistant coach will stay current with sport-specific knowledge by reading literature and attending clinics and workshops.

Responsibility for Rules and Regulations: The assistant coach will study and understand rules for the sport, including the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.

Program Promotion: The assistant coach will promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.

Program Organization: The assistant coach is expected to hold daily practices. Absences should be for illness or emergencies and cleared in advance by the building athletic director; the head coach is not authorized to excuse an assistant from practice.

Standard of Care: The assistant coach will model safety training, have working knowledge of basic athletic training skills, and be able to perform basic taping and first aid functions.

Professionalism: The assistant coach should exercise good judgment, project positive coaching behaviors, and contribute to the development of student athletes, including basic skills, leadership, teamwork, and a calm, fair-minded approach.

Sportsmanship and Ethics: The assistant coach will model ethical behavior, humility, and good citizenship at all times.

Supervision: The assistant coach is responsible for participants from report time to departure time.

Presentation of Rules/Regulations: The assistant coach reinforces eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as directed by the head coach.

Attention to Eligibility Rules: Ensure each participant completes the eligibility process before practice participation.

Accident/Injury Procedure: Call 911 for serious or difficult injuries and submit an Accident Report Form to the building athletic director within 24 hours; report emergencies immediately to the building athletic director and director of athletics.

Meeting Attendance: Attend building, district, and league meetings.

Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment: Report safety concerns and care for equipment and facilities used in the program.

Violations and Ejections Procedure: Report violations/ejections to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately following the contest.

Coach Evaluation Process: Attend an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director after the season.

Assistant Coach as Program Leader: Meet with the head coach before the season to develop program goals and plans for consistent instruction of fundamental skills, systems, and strategies.

Responsibility for Program Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory: Account for all equipment and supplies checked out to the coach at the start of the season.

Program Purchases: Request essential program needs through the head coach; do not purchase program items with personal funds.

Fundraising Activities: Work through the head coach for fundraising and obtain advance approval from the building athletic director for funds.

Performs other related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.

Administrative and Other

Administrative duties include supervision, presentation of rules/regulations, eligibility awareness, accident procedures, meetings, facility and equipment responsibility, violations/ejections, coach evaluations, program leadership, and equipment/inventory management.

Financial and Equipment: Include program equipment, supplies, and inventory management; follow purchasing and fundraising guidelines; do not use personal funds for program purchases.

Other responsibilities: Per the district and building needs, duties may be added or modified.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; one year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary/post-secondary athletics program or related club coaching; proven training in drills, safety, and skill application.

Additional Requirements: Work scheduled hours consistently.

Preferred Qualifications

Three or more years of paid middle/high school and/or post-secondary coaching experience and/or related club coaching.

Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course, including passing the test.

Conditions of Employment and Certifications

21 years of age or older; criminal background clearance; First Aid and CPR certification (hands-on).

Online Concussion Training (CT). A free course is available at

the Federation’s NFHS Learn site. Note: Applicants may submit an application prior to completing FA/CPR/CT Training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of league and WIAA rules, NFHS sport-specific rules, record keeping, and school board policies.

Ability to organize and oversee a sport-specific program, follow policies, work independently with attention to detail, communicate effectively, and maintain professionalism and confidentiality.

Ability to foster cultural competence and equity, and promote district-wide commitments to student voices and diverse communities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands include regular sitting, standing, walking, manual dexterity, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally; vision requirements apply. Reasonable accommodations available.

Work environment is indoors with moderate to loud noise; accommodations may be provided as needed.

Work Schedule and Reporting

Work schedule varies; days depend on the sport’s schedule. Position reports to and is evaluated by the Building Athletic Director.
