Huff & Huff, Inc. a subsidiary of GZA (H&H/GZA) is seeking an Architectural Historian with seven (7) to 15 years’ experience in Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 processing and coordination, to support our environmental practice, working in an embedded role with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The successful candidate will have a solid educational background, be self-motivated with a professional attitude, and meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) Professional Qualification Standards.
As a Section 106 experienced Architectural Historian, your work will include conducting architectural reviews for projects throughout the entire state of Illinois on behalf of IDOT. Experience with IDOT’s Cultural Resources Program a plus. The qualified candidate must be SOI Certified to conduct Architectural Historian duties. In addition to the architectural reviews, the successful candidate will work with IDOT in coordinating Section 106 reviews with federal agencies. Section 106 coordination will focus on working primarily with the Federal Highway Administration, as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers.
This is a professional architectural historian position accountable for planning and conducting architectural surveys to identify, record, and preserve architectural sites. These surveys are related to proposed highway and roadway projects processed through IDOT for state and local county/municipal projects that are federally or state funded. Employees will be responsible for reviewing cultural resource clearance requests, assuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws, and directing architectural surveys.
Duties include working in a highly collaborative environment on a wide range of transportation projects, including Section 106 coordination and documentation, historic resources surveys, archival research, historic resource evaluations, assisting in the development of historic context statements, and preparing historic resources technical reports. In addition to those skills identified above, the successful candidate will show skills and knowledge in the preservation of architectural sites, ability to conduct research and plan preservation activities, and ability to create clear and thorough historic assessments and other technical writings.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Architectural History, History, Historic Preservation, Heritage Conservation, Planning SOI Certified Section 106 Coordination and documentation experience Knowledge and experience with Federal Highway Administration Section 106 review and approval process Seven or more years of full-time professional experience Familiarity with environmental laws including NEPA & Section 106 Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex projects while meeting established deadlines
