Position Summary The School of Social Work (SSW) at UNC Chapel Hill invites applications for a mid-career/senior level tenured/tenure-track faculty position with a primary focus on advanced research methodology and analytic innovation relevant to social work practice and policy. Successful applicants will develop, refine, and apply rigorous quantitative and/or mixed methods approaches to inform the design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions, programs, or policies. The faculty member will engage in research, teaching, and service and should have the capacity to obtain external funding. The home will be the School of Social Work with opportunities for collaboration across medicine, public health, psychology, data science, and related fields. We seek scholars who advance methodological frontiers and can apply these tools to social problems, including causal inference, complex systems modeling, implementation science, longitudinal or big-data analytics, and community-engaged methods.
The position carries a standard teaching load and a distribution of effort of 67% teaching, 16.5% research, and 16.5% service/community engagement. The faculty member will support school research initiatives and may receive course releases negotiated with the Dean.
Key Responsibilities
Doctoral teaching and design/teaching of PhD-level courses in advanced statistics and research design
Methodological leadership and consultation with faculty and students on rigorous studies, including clinical trials and complex designs
Lead or contribute to grant applications by developing study designs, power analyses, and ensuring rigor and reproducibility
Support protocol development, trial registration, and data safety considerations
Offer workshops and methods clinics translating advanced methodologies for applied audiences in social work
Support school initiatives to enhance statistical analysis and research rigor
Maintain an independent, externally funded research program
Minimum Education and Experience
Doctoral degree in Social Work, Public Health, Statistics/Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Psychology, Economics, Education, or a related field
Demonstrated excellence in externally funded research and a strong publication record
Ability to teach and consult on advanced statistics and research design at the doctoral level and mentor researchers
Evidence of successful collaborations on complex studies, including clinical trials or other rigorous designs
Proficiency with major statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, SAS; Python a plus) and reproducible research practices
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Expertise in causal inference, longitudinal/multilevel models, missing-data methods, psychometrics/measurement invariance
Experience leading or contributing to a methods core, center, or multi-site team
Ability to translate complex methods for interdisciplinary, practice-oriented audiences
Commitment to community-engaged and responsive research with inclusive sampling and bias-aware analytics
Degrees in Social Work are valued but not required
