Environmental Engineering Department Manager Overview The Environmental Engineering Department Manager is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of a department within a global practice and regional office. This includes supporting and executing business strategy for the responsible department, developing high-performance teams, and promoting the Burns & McDonnell culture, values and mission. This also includes representation of the department in development and alignment of national growth strategies and procedures for the Environmental Engineering Technical Service Area and the Environmental Services Division. The Environmental Engineering Department Manager will lead the department in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service. Professional services and construction project types undertaken by the Environmental Engineering technical services area include general civil grading support, stormwater management, stream restoration, constructed wetlands, solid waste facilities (MSW, industrial, and CCR), coastal restoration, environmental remediation, coal combustion residuals, manufactured gas plants, mine reclamation and permitting, constructed wetland treatment systems, industrial water treatment, and multi-discipline capital projects involving facility development and expansions. Project types span planning studies, design-bid-build, and design-build.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership to the team; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

Responsible for the profitable growth of the department; ensuring staff levels, staff loading, and staff assignments meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.

Implement, apply and support company, global practice and/or regional office programs and initiatives.

Navigating and managing change within the department.

Provide expert-level technical, design guidance and support.

Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

Manage department budget and expenditure of funds.

Prepare and present workload, financial and other key results to global practice or regional management as applicable.

Work collaboratively with department managers across the global practices and in other regional offices to develop and execute strategy plans.

Manage project managers and section managers, if applicable.

Support business development activities performed within the department, including participating in go-no-go discussions and reviewing proposals and/or contracts.

Recruit, develop, train, and retain staff.

Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the department.

Interpret the organization's policies, purposes, and goals to staff.

Ensure QA/QC process adherence.

Enforce compliance with company and site safety policies.

Lead diversity initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Comply with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related field from an accredited program plus 7 years of related professional experience in design and/or project management. Master's degree in engineering preferred.

Prior leadership/management experience preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

Ability to influence, lead, and manage change.

Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

Proficiency with computer software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Strong commitments to safety, quality and attention to detail.

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions and develop solutions under challenging conditions.

Knowledge of industry safety and environmental regulations preferred.

Professional Engineer PE license preferred.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.

Up to 25% travel may be required.

Experience with CCR projects including Facility Evaluation Reports and civil closure designs is a plus.

Experience in mine reclamation, stream restoration, etc. projects is a plus.

Experience managing environmental multi-disciplinary Design Build projects is a plus.

Experience working with international resources preferred.

Experience with automating design practices is a plus.
