Police Officers . Officers work in a team environment with integrity, professionalism, humanity and courage to protect the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. They will serve the Homewood Campus, East Baltimore Campus and Peabody Campus where officers will be assigned to work, and will help JHPD lead in responsive, quality, and customer service-oriented policing.

Responsibilities

include providing community-oriented law enforcement services, patrols and crime prevention to protect life and property; supporting student and staff initiatives; developing and maintaining positive rapport with students, faculty, staff and nearby communities; enforcing University policies and regulations and state laws; and working in partnership with other university staff. Officers will operate under 21st century policing principles, with daily supervision by a Sergeant.

Shift : This position involves shift work and rotating days off.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Represents the JHPD’s vision, mission and values when interacting with the university and community groups; coordinates JHPD resources and activities under supervision to address campus concerns.

Performs law enforcement duties: enforce laws, rules and regulations; conduct simple and complex problem-solving projects to enhance safety and reduce harm.

Implements patrol priorities and community policing strategies; patrols designated areas by vehicle, bicycle and foot; identifies hazards, violations and unusual conditions.

Maintains visible presence and develops relationships with community stakeholders to deter crime.

Responds to calls for assistance and emergencies; de-escalates when appropriate; coordinates with other response levels to ensure safety.

Coordinates and cooperates with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff on investigations and disruptions.

Conducts investigations of incidents reported on shift; coordinates preliminary investigative activities at scenes until arrival of investigative entities.

Interacts with university community and surrounding neighborhoods; directs traffic and assists with crowd control.

Provides safety information and conducts community safety programs.

Participates in specialized units or activities as instructed (crime prevention, investigations, special events).

Inspects and maintains equipment and clothing; operates law enforcement equipment.

Performs or assists with evidence collection and retrieval; serves warrants and summonses as needed.

Prepares or assists with cases for court and testifies when necessary; collaborates with local and state law enforcement agencies.

Performs office duties (answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, providing information); maintains visitor logs.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Must be at least 20 ½ years of age.

Conditions of Employment Employees must successfully complete a training academy and maintain certification as specified by MPCTC. Pre-employment and random drug testing may apply. A one-year probationary period follows successful MPCTC training completion.

Other:

Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the MPCTC and valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Clery Act designated campus security authority (CSA) compliance.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and meet additional citizenship/residency documentation requirements as specified.

Applicant must provide official proof of separation from the military in good standing with an honorable discharge prior to a conditional offer.

Must not have a felony conviction.

Must demonstrate physical ability to perform the job.

Must work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on-call, and as needed.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Successfully pass a written exam and oral interview.

If prior law enforcement experience, must have no record of serious or repeated disciplinary actions or citizen complaints.

* Finalists will undergo a comprehensive background check, medical exam, drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.

The written exam process requires scheduling an appointment. Qualifying candidates will receive an instruction email. The testing window will be open Sept 16, 2025, to Oct 24, 2025.

Work Environment The position involves indoor/outdoor work, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions, possible call-ins during emergencies, rotating shifts, holidays and weekends. A high level of cultural competence is required.

Physical Demands Physical health, strength, agility and stamina are required. Duties may include sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, lifting and transporting objects and persons; manual dexterity and vision requirements apply; communication via oral, written, electronic and telephonic methods.

Additional Compensation Incentives CERTIFICATION INCENTIVE:

$15,000 increase to base salary for MPCTC certification and related requirements.

CITY RESIDENCY:

20% increase over base salary for Baltimore City residents.

Non-Competitive Career Path: Police Officer I to III; annual step increases.
