Assistant Professor (Conducting) in the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College. Tenure-track position to begin August 15, 2026. Employment Type: Full-Time (1.0 FTE), Benefits-Eligible; Exempt (Salaried).

Prerequisites and Qualifications

Required: Doctorate in conducting or music education; we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 30, 2026.

Ability to teach wind ensemble and instrumental conducting.

Preferred: Evidence of excellence in teaching through articulation of pedagogy; demonstrated commitment to undergraduate students in a liberal arts community; demonstrated commitment to research, scholarship, and/or creative engagement; demonstrated commitment to constructive collaboration and recruitment in an active music department; demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities.

Responsibilities

Teach six-course equivalents each academic year. In the first year, the successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching assignment of five courses, plus one fully-compensated course release. Courses may be different sections of the same course within a semester.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include conducting the Gustavus Wind Orchestra (the flagship wind ensemble, which undertakes an annual tour) and the Gustavus Wind Symphony, as well as teaching conducting courses.

The possibility of teaching an upper-level course in the candidate's area of specialization on rotation in the music department, or teaching various music education or general education courses based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Help cultivate a welcoming community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Engage in initiatives to improve teaching and scholarship through collaboration and professional development.

Advance scholarship by working with undergraduate research assistants, participating in writing activities, applying for internal and external grants, and utilizing campus research facilities.

Develop professional skills by participating in faculty meetings and committees, attending faculty development days, and utilizing the College's resources and memberships (e.g., NCDFDD).

Salary and Benefits

Competitive starting salary range of $62,000 to $68,000, adjusted based on experience, training, certifications/licensure, market factors, department budgets, and responsibilities.
