Overview

The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University is seeking an assistant professor of music (tenure-track) with expertise in the history and practice of Black American music. The candidate will contribute to research on music associated with Black American culture, including, but not limited to, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R' n’ B, Soul, Funk and/or Hip-Hop, as well as the music of the broader African diaspora. The start date is July 1, 2026. Responsibilities

Hold a 2/2 teaching load for music majors and general population students, including courses such as Jazz History, New Orleans Music, and other courses in Black American music history, theory, and/or performance based on experience. Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students. Demonstrate strong research and/or creative output; maintain an active portfolio of scholarly work and/or performances. Foster connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans. Collaborate with the Department of Africana Studies and other faculty affiliates as appropriate. Qualifications

Experience teaching at the college/university level and evidence of successful classroom instruction. Promising research and/or creative production related to Black American music. Commitment to contributing to the university’s excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Ability to engage with diverse student populations and local musical communities.
