PhD Position in Ecology and Conservation Biology at UC Davis
I am recruiting a PhD student to start in my lab in the department of Environmental Science & Policy at UC Davis in 2026. My lab will research a breadth of themes in ecology and conservation biology, including global change ecology, macroecology, tropical ecology, with a focus on birds. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to ecology or conservation biology. Field, analytical, or publishing experience are valued but not required. This intermediate level environmental position acts as rulemaking coordinator for Chapter 62-304 Florida Administrative Code, coordinates TMDL submittal to EPA, serves as technical editor, and contributes to Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for waterbodies not meeting water quality standards. Responsibilities include drafting rulemaking documents, working with managers and attorneys, and ensuring reports use consistent technical and legal language and are Section 508 compliant. Other duties include investigating the behavior, fate, and impacts of water quality parameters on surface and groundwater, preparing and interpreting water quality reports, and assisting water quality studies with state and federal agencies. Preferred qualifications and general notes: familiarity with environmental regulations and regulatory permitting; ability to work with state and federal agencies; willingness to travel; strong writing and communication skills. All PhD students are guaranteed full five years of funding, including salary, tuition, and healthcare. The program spans genomics, microbiology, ecology and evolution, and cellular, molecular, and developmental biology, with an emphasis on quantitative approaches. Applicants may apply to a single lab (direct entry) or join a rotation program to explore three labs before choosing a lab. Important dates: Applications are due December 1, 2025. Toolik Field Station – Station Supervisor Location: Toolik Field Station, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK. Position involves leadership of operations at a remote Arctic field station, supervision of staff, coordination with researchers, and fieldwork in challenging environments. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and several years of progressive responsibility managing operations in a remote setting; preferred qualifications include a master’s degree in natural science or hospitality, and Wilderness First Responder/EMT. Domestic travel and heavy field work are expected. Term: 9 months of the year, February through September, with off-contract months November through January.
