Assistant Professor, Digital Cultures and Ethnography

Position Overview The Department of Comparative Studies at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Digital Cultures and Ethnography. The field of specialization is open. We seek a scholar whose work reflects the department’s commitment to critical, interdisciplinary approaches to culture and society. Potential disciplinary backgrounds include Folklore Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, Information Science, and Media Studies. The department especially seeks candidates with expertise in digital cultures, ethnography, and artificial intelligence. Topics may include online groups and communities, genres and contexts; politics of information and misinformation; social media and online mythmaking; new global forms of folklore and performance; worldmaking projects in virtual spaces; and the social, political, and environmental implications of digital technologies and data cultures. We value candidates trained and actively engaged in digital ethnography, and welcome work that incorporates other methods. The candidate will offer introductory courses in Ohio State’s General Education program, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in the department. Experience with program development, securing external resources, and building interdisciplinary connections and research initiatives is highly valued. The department is highly interdisciplinary and will engage in conversation with related fields such as Folklore Studies, Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies, Race, Gender, and Ethnic Studies, Literary Studies, Religious Studies, and Science and Technology Studies. Responsibilities

Develop and maintain a productive research program in digital cultures and ethnography. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, contributing to strengths in folklore, science and technology studies, and cultural studies. Demonstrate excellence in student mentoring. Contribute to program development, curricular development, and other service to the department. Education And Experience Requirements

Required : The candidate must have Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment (August 15, 2026). ABDs are welcome to apply. Desired : Candidates with training in digital ethnography and those whose work intersects with other department fields are preferred.
