Under the supervision of the Section Manager, the Hydrologist Associate serves as a project lead for developing and reporting regional groundwater flow models. They act as a resource for modeling expertise within the department, leading or working independently across all stages of model development, from conceptualization to application. The ideal candidate has experience with groundwater flow modeling using MODFLOW, including calibration, uncertainty analysis, and communicating results to stakeholders. Work Environment
This position may offer remote work within Arizona, with a minimum of two days on-site per week at the Phoenix office. The department values flexibility, autonomy, and trust, supporting remote work within the state's guidelines. Job Duties
Develop regional-scale groundwater flow models Generate reports and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences Provide modeling expertise internally and externally Review hydrological studies and reports Analyze geologic and hydrological data Manage project work plans and schedules Lead or manage hydrologists and contractors as needed Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Extensive knowledge of groundwater modeling techniques, especially MODFLOW, inverse modeling, and statistical interpretation. Skills in problem analysis, data management, GIS, technical report writing, and effective communication. Ability to lead complex projects and mentor junior staff. Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading groundwater modeling projects and calibration Technical management experience Strong communication skills demonstrated through publications or presentations Proficiency with Groundwater Vistas, GMS, Python, SQL, VBA, ArcGIS, or QGIS Professional accreditation (PG/RG or PE) preferred but not required Pre-Employment Requirements
Advanced degree in hydrology, geology, hydrogeology, civil or environmental engineering, or related field. Minimum of 8 years' experience in numerical groundwater modeling or related areas. Candidates with exceptional experience and a B.S. degree may be considered. Driving or vehicle use may be required; see Driver’s License Requirements. All new hires must complete E-Verify. Benefits
