Overview
The Minneapolis Police Department is looking for people who will treat others with dignity, give them voice and respect, be neutral in decision-making and work to build trust. They should show care, connect as members of the community, communicate effectively, and act with courage and character. This is a full-time position with variable work shifts, including weekends and holidays. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas. Work Location : This position currently works on-site only.
Information Session : A department information session is hosted for applicants. Attendance is optional; registration is NOT required. Date: TBD. Government Issued Photo ID required for entry. The session will cover: application process and educational requirements; background investigation information; POST minimum selection standards for peace officer licensure; medical, psychological, physical, and drug & alcohol testing.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
Patrol assigned area to enforce laws, detect and prevent crime and protect life and property.
Apprehend and arrest law violators (including probable cause arrests), prepare written reports of crimes and assist in prosecution.
Draft and execute arrest warrants and make probable cause arrests.
Establish probable cause, draft, prepare and execute search warrants.
Enforce traffic laws, conduct traffic operations, investigate accidents and reconstruct serious or fatal incidents.
Collect, evaluate, investigate, protect and preserve evidence at crime or accident scenes.
Interview witnesses, victims and suspects and draft formal statements for court; testify in court as needed.
Respond to residential and business alarms and emergencies.
Protect the rights and safety of all individuals, including political figures and dignitaries.
Recover and secure lost, stolen or abandoned property.
Operate computer terminals to enter and retrieve essential information.
Required Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of a two- or four-year Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice degree through a Professional Peace Officer Education Program and pass the Minnesota P.O.S.T Licensing Exam or equivalent. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Licenses/Certifications : Minnesota P.O.S.T. Certified (obtained within 60 days of Academy start date); Minnesota State Police Officer License. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license by October 06, 2025.
State Requirements :
Must not have a felony conviction.
Must successfully pass MPD background investigation.
Medical/Psychological Exams : Candidates must be medically and psychologically fit and pass a drug and alcohol screening prior to hire. Pre-employment medical exams, including work simulation tests, and psychological exams are tentatively scheduled after successful background clearance.
Physical Requirements : Police work is physically and mentally demanding. Cadet fitness goals will be used during the academy. The role requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and reaching. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and have color vision and depth perception adequate for operational duties.
Selection Process Candidates must complete all portions of the process to be eligible. Qualified candidates will receive communications from HR.

Must maintain Minnesota POST licensing with ongoing continuing education every three years.
Knowledge of laws, ordinances and police procedures; ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in emergencies.
Able to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; strong oral and written communication skills.
Authorized to work in the United States with no felony convictions.
Color vision adequate to distinguish colors (red, yellow, green) and corrected vision to 20/40; standard hearing without significant loss.
Must pass medical/psychological examinations prior to hire; drug and alcohol screening.
Maintain physical fitness as a condition of employment.
Must pass thorough background investigation that includes acceptable employment history, honesty, driving and conviction records.
