Overview
Research Scientist - Analytical Group Leader role responsible for leading the Analytical Laboratory Team in Wauwatosa, providing technical support for BU R&D, manufacturing plants, and Bostik customers. Responsibilities include team management, safety, instrumentation input, workflow documentation, and problem solving in collaboration with cross-functional resources.
Responsibilities
Manage the Analytical Laboratory Team in Wauwatosa to provide technical support for BU R&D, manufacturing plants, and Bostik customers. Manage expectations and performance (including safety performance) and develop the careers of subordinate personnel using Bostik's Performance Management process.
Work within established safety guidelines and propose process and safety improvements.
Provide input on the selection and purchase of analytical instrumentation and specialized analyses; responsible for maintenance and repair of some equipment.
Provide input on workflow processes and documentation for the Analytical Laboratory.
Engage business and technical resources to interpret, solve, and communicate complex technical problems.
Key Technical Activities
Maintain a substantial technical role including project leadership, direct engagement in problem solving and analytical testing.
Develop, perform, and document analytical characterization methods aligned to Bostik business needs.
Develop, execute, and document calibration and verification procedures.
Support instrument maintenance and repair of analytical equipment through hands-on troubleshooting and coordination with equipment vendors.
Coordinate with Analytical management on prioritization and resource assignment for incoming analysis requests based on importance and urgency.
Support development and execution of a strategic research/resource plan for the Wauwatosa Analytical team to align with business strategies and team growth.
Manage training and growth of professional analysts; set goals and conduct formal performance reviews (mid-year and annual).
Context and Environment
Provide expertise across multiple chemistries/product families in multiple business units with independent business plans, balancing longer-term research with immediate technical crises.
Communicate with multiple functions and geographies with varying education and technical expertise.
Support a collaborative team environment and coordinate with Bostik and Arkema analytical teams at other sites.
Purpose To support specialized testing capabilities for Bostik Americas, with coordination from other global analytical laboratories. This includes providing input on techniques, equipment, and resources; serving as a resource in interactions with external entities; growing a team of professionals; supporting a safe analytical testing process; and ensuring data is repeatable and technically sound.
Qualifications/Experience Required
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field (Masters or PhD preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial laboratory or equivalent proven ability to manage multiple complex projects in a service laboratory.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with technical and business resources.
Proven ability to lead/mentor a team of analysts.
Experience in multiple polymer characterization techniques including rheological, thermal, chromatographic and spectral techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Experience with adhesive and sealant chemistries, end uses, and formulations preferred.
